My Two Cherries Chisels

>I have finished sharpenging my new chisels, and found that it took quite a bit of work to get the backs flattened. They sure were shiny, but nowhere near flat, and in several cases convex.

Has anyone bought the promotional set that is not polished? Are they reasonably flat? I wondered if the polishing actually contributed to the wavy surface.

I haven't used the chisels yet, but should get to put them to use this weekend.

Thanks to all on the board for the advice after I found the Marples weren't holding an edge.

>I don't have any Two Cherries chisels but I have bought eBay and other chisels that someone has polished, usually on a buffer.

A buffing wheel and honing compound has to be one of the best ways known to quickly destroy a flat surface. Never trust a buffed surface to be flat!

>My comment on the promotional set of Two Cherries chisels is they have different handles than the shiny set. The promo set uses the same small handle on the 1/2 and 3/4 sizes as the 1/4 size. Whereas the shiny set gets gradually bigger handles in the 1/2 and 3/4 sizes. So there is a noticeable difference between the sets besides just the shine.

>I have the promotional set. I thought I had flattened the backs pretty well but now I'm noticing that on the 1" chisel, the very end of the blade is convex by a very noticable amount. It's not quite 1/32" but close. No wonder the chisel won't go straight down in a mortise no matter what I do! I'm considering returning them.

>Randall,

I bought a set of the Hirsch ( out of the same factory) firmer chisels recently. They too had a polished finish and I know what you mean about the "wavy" finish. Only 2 of the 6 took a fair bit of work to flatten (about 20 minutes each).

In hindsight, it appears that the polishing actually rounds the edges and if I were to purchase some more, it would be a lot quicker to re-grind the bevel back about 1/16" to where the face was pretty flat.

Nice chisels though.
