#46 slitter depth stop question

Sandor in Boyds, MD

>I am wondering if I have the right stop since it gets in the way when using the plane normally.

That is to say that the retracted position of this stop only allows for maybe a 1/4" depth of cut. I flipped it upside down to get it out of the way. Is this correct, or might I have the slitter stop from some other plane?

While we are on the subject, why do I need a slitter stop at all?

>Well iam no expert but here is pic of 45 and 46 depth stops i have. The 46 is next to slitter.

One of my projects is to make front depth stop for my beat up user 46, in fact that 46 works so well i just may invest in more blades for it. And for why the stop, just how far do you want to go.

>Patrick Leach says that the #46 only came with a single depth stop (excluding the wrap around depth stop) and that the depth stop was fixed to the plane with a single thumb screw. When desired, both the screw & its depth stop were switched to the rear of the plane.

That would be impossible with my #46. My front depth stop is a flat foot fixed to a section of rod. The rod slides up and down in a machined portion of the casting and is secured by a brass screw, the head of which matches the rear depth stop nut.

Whether it's original or not, I don't know, but my rear depth stop resembles the pictures already posted. Also, it is secured with a round knurled brass nut that fits the threaded end of the rear arm.

My 46 doesn't have a fence but does have the slotted guard which is held on by two unique screws. According to Leach, that probably makes it a pre 1900 model.

>Sandor-

I think the rear depth stop was only intended to be used with the slitting cutter, not in regular use. On a 45 the slitting cutter and depth stop would have both been attached to the bolt and tightened down with a thumb screw. I'm not 100% sure that the 46 even came with a rear depth stop- mine did but it turns out it was a 45 depth stop like yours. I think some sellers put a 45 depth stop on it because it looks like something belongs there.

Either way, when using the 46 for dados, rabbets, etc you only need the front depth stop. The 46 is an exception tool, you'll love it.
