Thank God for ignorant people

Moses Yoder in White Pigeon, MI

>If it weren't for some people not knowing what tool collectors think the tools are "worth", I wouldn't have half the tools that I do. This is a good example, someone can probably get a decent scrub plane for 10 bucks and put an iron and cap iron in it and have a decent scrubber.

Yet another case where...

Dennis

>They are light in weight and have blade width of of 1 5/8" Lot of people call them "dime store plane"

The are quite common and with no markings can pick them up really cheap.

My question is...

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>where's the sharp wood on it? He says the wood is good and he cut himself on it...

Oh, maybe the "it" refers back to the blade in the previous paragraph?

One phrase comes to mind

Bob Hackett

>"Sharp as a pound of wet leather"

One of the better ones that I brought back from Texas.

Another one that may apply is...

"She`s pretty alright.Pretty ugly, and pretty likely to stay that way."

Texans do have a way with words, don`t they.

>I do admire the Texas way with words, my now over-used favorite being "all hat, no cattle."

I had a friend and coworker who would have given Ms. Malaprop a run for her money, and who once said, in all seriousness, "Sharp as a button."

>You do have to hand it to some prior owner, assuming that's how that iron and cap iron got there, who, having somehow lost the proper iron/cap iron, realized that a block plane set would fit, however badly.

It sure ain't graceful looking, though.

Crossed cliches

Bob Hackett

>In the middle of a soon to be heated discussion my wife looked at me and said"The story`s on the other foot now isn`t it?".That defused the situation, let me tell you.

A co-worker when speaking of another`s devotion to duty said he`ll stick to something "Come high or thin water"

Another co-worker when asked if he could handle a rather simple job"Sure,it doesn`t take a brain scientist".I think they got the right man for the job there.

My all time favorite workplace story centers around Tunk Stevens of Goudy&Stevens.A potential yacht buyer was saying how the boatyard was larger than he expected. When he asked how many fellows worked there,Tunk replied"About half".Never even a hint of a smile.

Seems Texans aren`t the only ones who know how to turn a phrase.

>Bob, that reminds me of one "conversation" that had back in '87 while I was working part time at a large gas station in N.J.

This lady pulls up to a gas pump as if to get gas, but when I went to her window to what it is she wanted instead of telling what gas she wanted she asked me "Do you have restrooms here", to which I replied in a dead serious manner, "No ma'am, where not allowed to rest here". She looked at me in total disbelief and drove off.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh well, I thought it was funny, and still giggle over it from time to time to this very day.

>I'm not convinced that's a Stanley #40.. The handle doesn't look right.. too blocky and looks like hardwood with a thick layer of varnish. The hex bolt that holds the tote to the body is also incorrect for a #40.

To me it looks like a Goodall plane- made in the 20's or 30's. Lower-quality plane sorta like the Sheltons. There's no reason it wouldn't make a decent scrub plane, it's just not a Stanley #40.
