handsaw sharpening

Tony Z.

>Gentlemen,

This past Saturday I received via USPS, two handsaws sharpened for me by Steve Cooke. The first was a small Disston open-handle backsaw, filed crosscut at 15 tpi. Excellent job--tracks like a bloodhound in everything I tried it on! I picked up this saw several months ago, and the saw is already becoming the sweetheart of the shop(next to my four year daughter). The other was a D7 rip, filed at 5-1/2 tpi. A single test cut indicates another quality job. Steve is located at:

Cooke's Sharpening Service

3151 W. Market St.

York, PA 17404

tel. (717) 793-9527

I have no affiliation with Steve--just a very satisfied customer.

>I was passing through York and dropped off the saws on Friday, April 16th. The Post Mistress delivered them on Saturday, April 24th. Total postage for both saws was $6.00. Cooke's sharpening rates are very reasonable also.

>When I dropped the saws off, I asked Steve Cooke if he hand sharpened or machine sharpened. He indicated he hand sharpened, although he did say he had sharpening machinery. To tell the truth, the little 15 tpi Disston teeth are just too small for me to tell any tooth to tooth difference. On the other hand, the D7 rip, upon close examination, shows each tooth being unique, with no repeat pattern of filing marks. Both saws cut real nice, and that's what I was after. Steve told me he treats all handsaws as if they were his own.

>Do you know whether he will re-tooth, like Tom Law did? (i.e., change a 14tpi x-cut to a 13tpi rip, for instance)
