Anyway, collectability has no logic. If folks want it, it is collectable. Utility is irrelevant.

As for the standard LN #1 - a couple of folks on line here have said that they use it sort of like a large block plane, for trimming and so forth.

I once called LN, and asked them what it was good for. They told me that people just want them. (!)

>I don't have one to see how useful it actually is, but I can imagine it would give quite a bit more leverage to plane end grain with than a block plane, so with the right blade geometry could make a very useful plane to carry in an apron pocket, especially for trim carpenters.

Plus, here's a question for you; why does it have to have any use at all? I think if you were to break down life into only doing things that are absolutely necessary, you would have a pretty boring life. The #1 plane is cute; always has been, always will be ;)

I've never used a #1, so I can't vouch for their functionality, but I'd like to have one just to have one. Dang if I'll 3 or 4 digits for one tho. If nothing else I'd use it as sort of an excutive pencil sharpener or paper weight.

from what I've heard some folks use them, and swear by them for cutting endgrain and trimming miters.

>I have one, but not the limited edition. Mine is the brass one. I have it because my Wife thought it was cute, and who am I to turn down a tool;-) That said, It is kind of handy for small things. I hole it lamost like a blick plane, with my hand wrapped around it. Works pretty good.

Trimming end grain. Wouldn't that be where the LA block is best suited?

Yup, LA Blocks do it for me, but like I said, some folks also feel that a #1 does very well in this area as well. I'd have to see it to believe it tho.

How 'bout it gang, anybody use a #1 on endgrain with satisfactory results?

>Talk about body piercing and we see some pretty weird piercing around here. Guess you're screwed (nailed?) for having it as a collectable. Of course since those are masonary nails, perhaps its reconfigured for stone trimming. Makes it easy for wall mounting though :-)

>Sorry Ernie, I'll try to do better next time! :-)

If you're interested, click the link below for some information on how it was built.

And just so we're not hijacking the thread...I have a ratty old #1 that I use regularly (see below, next to Ernie's pull). It's good for small areas of gnarly grain where you can't fit a full size smoother...it's also my goto favorite for making molding plane wedges. Basically, I use it as a high angle block plane. It fits in my big mitt nicely and at times can be easier to hold onto than a block plane. I wouldn't spend big bucks on a #1, but seeing as this one was found on the cheap, I'd better use it...wouldn't want to offend the Tool Gods.

And just to wander further off topic...why do you guys think the nails are masonry nails? They are standard issue 4" Ardox framing nails. Is this a Canadian thing again like Robertson/square recess screws?

>Heck of a good job making that fake #1 Rob!! Man, looking at it on screen it sure looks real. I'd say the real hard part was carving that frog eh?

I looked at your website, and I am wondering if the sole of your Mouse Plane is flat or concave. Looks concave to me, but it could just be the lighting and screen distortion. Does it actually work?

>Thanks, Todd!

Nah! the hard part was letting it go. Guess I can always make a few more. Maybe take one to the next tool sale and drop it down the stairs.

The frog only took a few minutes...the knob and tote took the most time. That rosewood sure is nice to turn. Nasty dust tho'.

The sole on the mouse plane is flat. My bad photography is likely to blame. It works (poorly) if you remove the nose piece, but it was made as a sarcastic joke, not a working tool. I built a second one with a beautiful walnut burl infill as a gift for someone last fall and it turned out much better than the first. They're a great desk toy, people just can't put them down.

It must look like none of my planes work, but I do make some real useable tools...honest!

>It's good I had to look twice just yesterday morning I figured out that the sides were welded together. I thought that the knob and tote were real except the hole in the front of the tote like on a #4 or larger. The lever cap is the best. it's ground out of some bar stock and dosent even flip down and lock bot it looks good. I don't know I I would want to buy any rare tools from him.

Rob, you are amazing!

It's a good thing I didn't see it on Ernie's bench first. I probably would have tried to behead him with a rusty Warren & Ted rip saw.
