What's the opposite of a lamb's tongue?

Jeremy Osner

>Hi all -- I have seen pictures of something called a "lamb's tongue", which is a way of terminating a chamfer with a short curve -- I always think it looks pretty and I'd like to incorporate it into a project sometime.

The other day I was putting cove molding around the edges of a niche in our sitting room and I had to figure out how to make the end of the molding look nice -- thinking of the lamb's tongue pictures, I marked and cut a little curve on the side of the cove. It looks pretty nice -- is there a name for this cut?

>I don't know if there is a name for the cut, but when case, crown, and base molding are stopped without butting into another surface, a common way to deal with the cut edge is to make a "self-return", where you essentially turn the end of the molding into an outside corner by cutting a miter and 'turning' the molding into the wall. Cutting those little self-return bits usually (at least for me) results in a session of hide and go seek behind my miter saw.

>Usually you cut a 45 degree angle and mitre it so it looks like it disappears into the wall.

>Yeah sounds like a return to me. I recently used lamb's tongues to terminate the chamfers on the outside corners of my bench. Its actually a couple of curves (or the ones I have seen anyway). Tis an elegant way to terminate a chamfer. The chamfer is more functional and the tongue dresses it up a bit.
