>Hiya "M"

I'm down in Niagara right now but I grew up in Eastern Ontario...take my suggestions with a grain of salt 'cuz it's been a while since I've been rust hunting up there.

First off, head out to Rideau Ferry from Perth and find Miller's antiques (it could be called Rideau Ferry antiques, but the locals just call it Millers)...I think it's regional road #1. The place is amazing...anything you want, they'll have a pile of it *literally* . Not bottom feeder prices but not bad. I found a nice Gage #G5 for twenty bucks last time I was there. After Millers, keep going towards Lombardy, and there is another Antique shop on your left...he's always good for a few tools.

There used to be a huge flea market in Stittsvillle on Sundays...haven't been in years so it may be long gone.

Kingston has a few good flea markets and an antique market behing the city hall every Sunday morning in the summer...I've found a few good deals there.

If you're after something specific at a reasonable price, there is a great old (the tools, not him) tool dealer in Ottawa ping me offline for his name and number.

Hope this helps a little.

Rob...who used to live in Brockville

PS: so, what's "M" stand for?

>Rob gave some some good sites for old tools.

I was at the Stittsville flea market this morning and bought a saw set for $7 Canadian. There were some planes there but not a lot. There was a Millers Falls equivalent of the Stanley 78 that was in nice shape with depth guage and fence. The same dealer had some nice big chisels (slicks?). A couple of braces, and a bunch of block planes.

Rideau Ferry Antiques outside Smiths Falls is still in business. I think they have more stuff now than when Rob last saw it. Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees. There is so much stuff you can only see the top layer; you really have to dig through piles to see what's there. And of course the aisles are now so small you can hardly kneel down to see what's at the bottom.

Keep looking. They show up. I know when I started looking, I had three planes given to me from friends who knew I was getting interested in this.

>You were given some pretty good leads... all it takes is perserverance and patience. You are not going to find your shopping list overnight, at least not at prices you would pay.

Auctions are also a pretty good source. Try to find auction listings for the Valley online. (I don't have the links on this computer.) Usually there are a couple of promising auctions every year. (Sometimes auction notices are posted at the Stittsville Flea Market as well.)

One other suggestion is to hit some of the antique shows in the summer. There is one that takes place near Riverside/Baseline outside in the summer. There is a great dealer with a lot of selection. You won't find cheap prices but you will find quality and selection. (The same dealer also does the Annual Summer Antique show in Merrickville as well.)

Check out the Tools of the Trade show in Pickering as well. It is held every year in April and October. A bit of a drive but you will be in heaven. Lots of other Neanders and lots of tools.

What are you looking for anyways?

>Thank you all for the responses...Millers sounds like its just up the road from me...I'll have to make a trip...anyone know if they are open during the week or only weekends?

I'm looking specifically, right now, for a 7 or 8 and a user back saw.

>Sorry for not getting back to you earlier Mike... I don't have any spare backsaws or jointers lying around.

One suggestion on the backsaw... if you are just looking for a user buy a cheapie at Home Depot to tide you over until you find a backsaw in the wild or off of eBay.

If you need a sawset or some files when you find your backsaw let me know!
