My first tool sale *LINK*

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>- that's as opposed to garage sale, flea market, or junque shop. The local Woodcraft sponsored a tool sale in their lot this morning, and Matt Curley, a fellow Islander (he's the official one: gotta hat), and I had a great couple of hours looking at stuff, including some droolworthy bits whose prices we didn't even ask (Matt may be submitting a pic of one for Sightings). I got some nice stuff, and, after selling a surplus block plane and a Millers Falls version of a Surform to one seller, spent just a few dollars net (I am NOT going to mention actual prices, to discourage Todd from posting that he is chased down the street by presentable young women just begging him to take a bucketful of the tools mentioned so that they can die happy):

A Stanley No. 51 spokeshave, bringing my collec - no, no, toolkit - up to nine, I think. Well, I didn't have that style, so I can justify it...

A couple of Jorgensen hold-down clamps (see below), something I'd never seen in the wild, and at a price that made them hard to resist (got three, sold one to Matt).

A Marples wood threading tap and screwbox, not much use showing on it. Incredible primitive-looking tap, screwbox is just that - a box, no handles or anything. 3/4" size, which is smaller than I'd have liked if I coulda selected.

PLUS: It turns out there's a large enough local contingent of P.A.S.T. members that there will be a sale in August nearby, AND the seller who told us about it lives in my town.

I have GOT to find more space; hard enough to walk into my shop now.

>I LIKE Todds' Stories about being chased down the street by presentable women with buckets of tools. C'mon now, if you don't mention $$ than we don't get to hear a drooly story. C'mon Bill, say how much. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese.

Glad you had a good time and found some rust to boot.

>I think it was about $25 altogether, though it may have been slightly less; I wound up about $10 out of pocket.

Oh, and I miscounted - I think I have 10 spokeshaves. Really too many, but the prices have been so good.

>Well, when you have to walk crabwise to get into the shop or tool storage (shelves or whatever) approaches the density of Lawrencium (see below), yes, you can.

I REALLY need to schedule some time for shop maintenance, like better tool storage; there's some unused space on the walls.

Eh? What's Lawrencium?

Lawrencium

>Isn`t that what Mr. Welk puts in the bubble machine to make it work?

MB-Really showing my age on this one.

>No, you're REALLY showing your age if you know who Mitch is. Lawrence Welk (a) stayed on TV longer and (b) has sufficient iconic status that even some young sprats who like musical history (like my #2 son) know who he is.

>Well when I was younger I thought "Skitch Henderson" was a rip off of "Mitch Miller" even tho he didn't have a sing along break on the Tonight show.JR
