Anyone know this knifemaker?

Jeremy Osner

>At the tailgating this morning I bought among other things, a pocket knife that is the second one I have bought by the same maker, both second hand. The only identifying mark is a little brass oval rivetted to the body that says "Old Timer". The blades are great quality steel and the locking mechanism is different from any I have seen before, a little metal plate next to the blade (on the end where the blade hinges out) that snaps into place when the blade is unfolded.

>As David said this knife was made by Schrade. i don't think they started using the "Old Timer " name until the 1970s and today they are a very common knife. Older schrade knives will be marked Schrade cutlery co. on the base of the blade and were made in Walden N.Y. then in the mid 1940's went to Schrade Walden name think they moved to Ellenville N.Y. in the 1950's. Older schrade knives are very well made and can be collectable if in excellent condition or unusual pattern.....The lock is called a " Liner " lock and is used by many of todays pocket knife makers and works well to release the blade one handed....Todd

>Factory has been in Ellenville for years. Just shut down production there last month. Over 500 "laid off." I think they shifted production overseas. A shame, and more then a few people in my community are out of work.

>I've been using shrade knives since I was a teenager.Good quality, affordable and very easy to find. Most hardware stores carry some form of their knife.I have two Old Timers. One small pocket model with two blades and a larger two bladed locking model.I also carry a small plastic handled schrade single bladed locking pocket knife that's my most used handtool.---Crackerjack
