Anybody got a planemakers book?

Rob in Kansas

>Last night Ernie gave me a 3/16 side bead body that came from the sale he talked about last week. There's no value to it because the guy put some type of stain on it, but...

I found a makers stamp that I believe says

RW Booth

93 Main St

I'm curious as to where it might be from and the approximate age. I just like to find out the history behind things.

I did find a piece of steel to make a blade, but it's tax day & I have to finish mine and file a couple extensions :( so I won't have time to do anything until next week.

Thanks,

Rob

>The book says

R.W. Booth

Planemaker in Philadelphia, Pa., 1846-47, and then a hardware dealer in Cincinnati, Ohio, 1848-80.

That is all the information given in "A guide to American Wooden Planes and their makers"

>R.W. Booth was a hardware dealer who marked planes in Cincinnati, OH. He worked under his own name only 1849-1852 but continued to work with an added "& Co." 1853-1879. No planes marked with the "& Co." are known and it's not sure whether he stopped marking planes or continued to use the earlier mark without that. Bob

Thanks guys!

>Thanks Ernie, Roy & Bob,

Nice to be able to know where it came from. I think I'll start a notebook with a little history on what I have. (That'll take about five minutes!) Then as I aquire things add to it. My grandparents made an "inventory" of everything before they moved to a retirement home with pictures, history, and who it was to go to. I hate to think of all the work of cleaning up when Grandpa Gillaspie dies! It will take a week just to clean out the shed let alone the house and farm!

Even though I don't plan on passing it on anytime soon some history will be nice to have whenever. My nephew is almost 3 and likes to help with his Bob the Builder tools. So it won't be too much longer before he's able to start doing things.

Thanks guys!
