Set of Side Beads

Todd Hughes

>Went to my wed. auction yesterday and were a good many tools there and i picked up this real nice complete and matching set of Mathieson Side bead planes. 10 planes they range in size from a tiny 1/8 in. up to 1 in. Really beautiful planes they are nice and bright in excellent condition. You can tell they spent thier life in a chest or cabinet.Wish I could tell you I got them real cheap but worked out that I had to pay about $11 ea. which i didn't think was two bad considering that it was a complete set and thier condition. Sort of hate to do it but think I will break the set up to sell them as i think that is probably the best way to do it.......Todd

>Todd,

For the record, I have a set of side beads and I don't find having a set of beads all that useful. I've only ever used 2 or 3 of the 7 or so.

Isn't there some clever way you could offer guys a choice of buying the complete set? This seems to happen to you fairly frequently. What about an auction for the set with a high reserve price. If that doesn't work out, then split them up.

I guess I don't have a problem with you parting out S#45's. Maybe I'm more sentimental about wooden planes cause I know they are so expensive to reproduce. I know guys like sets. Speaking just for myself, I'm almost always willing to pay a premium for a set.

Sets of hollows and rounds, sets of chisels, and other sets....something just doesn't set right with me about splitting this stuff up.

All that said- I recognize that this is your property and your right to do with it what you will. Its really none of my business. I don't mean to be telling you what to do with your property.

Agree

>Tough to break up the set, but you are correct about the use. Cabinetmakers need smaller sizes and carpenters need larger sizes. The whole set is neat, but covers alot of landscape. This is also true about H&Rs. On my furniture projects, the smaller sizes (under #6) get used constantly while the larger ones gather dust.

>What I do in a case like this since i sell almost exclusivly on the Ebay now is to list them seperately one to an auction but have them all listed at the same time in 10 auctions so the bidder has the chance to buy one or bid on them all in seperate auctions.I feel as a seller this is the best stragiey as it has bidders that may want them all bidding against bidders that might only want the one while if i listed all 10 in one auction I would only have bidders that wanted a complete set and were able to drop that much cash on them. This is the only way to go when you are selling most sets of chisels too,[maybe a rare set of stanley everlasts that were mint would be an exception] as you have people looking for one size to complete a set. At the same auction yesterday was a wonderful set of D.R. Barton long paring chisels that were in a sliding lid Barton wood box , a friend saw them first so I didn't bid but that is how i would have sold them as well.

In my experance side beads sell pretty well and are pretty popular,[more so then H&R's] and I expect to do well with them.....Todd

Posting this type of thing gives all true tool users/collectors the willies.Somehow I think you already know that.

>Perhaps you might choose to list them in the Classified forum for what you think is a good price (for you) for the whole set? Then, those who bemoan the loss of the intact set will have the opportunity to prevent it.

Just a thought...
