Rust removal

Rusty Miller

>I bought 3 planes yesterday, a #6 Bailey, #7 Bailey and a # 607 Bedrock body with the frog. Each of them has some rust. What is the best way to get the rust off? Most of it looks like surface rust.

Also, where do I find some parts for the Bedrock? Thanks for any help.

>How I would clean these planes is to strip the wood off and take the frogs off and then scrub them with an old tooth brush in hot soapy water. When dry if very rusty I use a fine wire wheel to lightly remove the outer rust.Key words are "Fine" and "Lightly" then i take some sand paper [maybe 220 grit?] on a wood block and sand the sides and sole from front to back until clean then oil it and put back together.Do the same thing to the blade. If the lever cap is nickled i spray it with WD 40 and gently wipe it with some fine steel wool. A plane cleaned like this will be clean but will not look like it has ever been cleaned which is the look I want. Lots of people overclean the planes so that they look artificial in an attempt to get them to look "New"

Except for the frog assembly Parts off a regular Stanley no. 7 will fit your Bedrock. Some of the early bedrocks had lever caps that had different markings but starting in about 1923 they used the same lever cap too.I know lots of Stanley parts get sold on ebay if you can't find them localy....Todd

Rust removal tip & a question

Scott Burr in Ben Lomond CA

>Surface rust is easy to remove with a good bath and a brillo (sos) pad (where are you Bill?). If it's really rusty electrollis (sp) is a quick and easy way of removing lots of rust. Get the plane really dry adn give it a good coat of wax before reassembling.

What kind of Bedrock? Does it have round sides like the 6 or the 7, or does it have flat sides?

This will help me to help you find parts.

>Scott,

Thanks for the response. The Bedrock has the flat toped sides. I need a cap lever, front knob, tote, and blade & chip breaker. I can make the knob and tote. I can find a good blade and probably use a LN chip breaker, but don't know where to find the lever cap.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If'in ya don't care...

>About making it "orignal" here's what I'd do:

1. look for a beat-up 7, not to beat up though. A lot of times you can get one with a broken casting wwith good parts. You can get knobs and totes pretty much anywhere, new of old.

2. A LN or Hock blade adn chip breaker would be a benifit to this plane then look for a lever cap on the "bay".

3. If i recall a 51/2 6 or 7 caps are all the same.

Also check the article section here, lots of good cleaning and derusting info.

>Just so you know what your looking for, take a look at the Bob Kaune type study link below. Just about any lever cap will work, mine has early cap but is late model, with a berg blade, actually almost a frankenstein bedrock. I find the bedrocks don't have the mass but some like that and just how often does one adjust the frog. I sure wouldn't put a lot of money into it.

>Hi Rusty -

If you decide to make your own tote and knob, you may need the screws and slotted nuts. You may be able to find these on Joel's toolsforworkingwood website. I've put the address below. He also sells new totes and knobs.

>Look for the lever cap on Ebay if you want to make it original. But expect to pay $35-$40 for it. They do show up occasionally. I parted one out about a year ago that had a broken base.

>Thanks to everyone for all the help. I'm going to start on the cleaning up this weekend. I'm really not trying to restort to original, just want a good plane for planing wood.

Again, thanks.
