Router PLane

Tony - Memphis

>Looking at adding a Stanley 71 router to my arsenal of wood hacking devices. Gosh, the prices on the bay are wow! Just wondering, I like old tools, but I'm no collector. Anything wrong with the new ones that are available? Also considered just making one based on the routers some of you folks have displayed here. Not exactly a real complicated tool.

make your own

>Easy to make in about any size you want, right now iam making couple small ones but not hard to make one with handles like the stanley.

I also would look for sargent or millerfalls models they sell for less and do the same thing.

Allen wrenchs, concrete nails(my fav) are easy to shape and sharpen. Thumb screws and eye bolts make good holders. For less than $5 can have a nice router that will do the job.

>There was a good discussion about this not to long ago, an archive search is in order. Look at the Record versions too; they made a nice one too. I can't see these costing too much unless it's mint with all the bells and whistles.

>Don't forget about the 71 1/2. They seem to go for $25 - $35 on eBay. I use one all the time, I love it, and I prefer it to the 71. Also, I think the new ones have a plastic handles, and I thought that Stanley stopped making new 71s.

>i bought one on ebay and returned it cuz it was cracked (seller didn't know)...then i got tired of bidding for other ones and just went ahead an bought a new one...

the new ones are pretty much the same as the old ones, except of course the fit and finish isn't as nice and the knobs are plastic...AND i had to spend a good 3 hours trying to flatten the undersides of the blades...

but it's a pretty basic tool and i don't suspect there's all that much difference (except cosmetic) between the new and the old...most later (and current) stanley planes are junk but i got tired of the hassle trying to get an old one...on a plane this simple and basic, i don't think i went wrong getting a new one...

from a visual perspective i'd rather have an old one, but it just wasn't worth the hassle...
