Cleaning Stanley #48 (long)

>The mailman brought my Stanley #48 today,(stealth gloat). It's in great shape, but could use some touch-up cleaning. The plating is mostly intact. What should I use to clean it? Do I wax it after cleaning?

Also, it has a two cutters marked R and L, but wasn't there a third wider cutter? Maybe something Ron Hock could reproduce? All wisdom is welcome, thanks.

>There is no 3rd cutter. When you swing the fence it either hides or exposes the left cutter. When hidden, the plane cuts a groove. When exposed the plane cuts a tongue.

The trick to using the 48 is to spend the requisite amount of time sharpen and then set the two cutters so that they cut complimentary tongue & groove profiles.

>According to B&G, a third cutter was shipped with the #48. It is for use when cutting the tongue on wider stock. It is only slightly less convenient to use the symmetric cutters and then remove the narrow strip.

>The 48 according to Walters Stanley guide came with 3 cutters the third one being wider.Years ago i had a Mint in Box example,[that i sold like a dope] and it had it's 3 cutters still in a little envolope. Imagine most planes pretty quickly lost the third cutter that wasn't in the plane...I usely clean nickle plated planes like this by spraying them with some WD 40 oil and going over them lightly with fine steel wool,[Key words here are lightly and fine] and then scrub them in hot soapy water with an old tooth brush.Personaly I wouldn't wax a plane like this but just wipe it down with some good oil,[Not WD 40] after done cleaning it....Todd
