>I called Tom Law the other day to see if the message of his retiring from sharpening was true or not. And in fact it is. He said he was getting way too many saws from folks he'd rather not sharpen for and at bargain prices so he's hanging it up. He said it all started out as helping out a fellow carpenter here and there and friends or an occaisonal woodworker or two and somehow got away from him. He has some remodeling to do and said he could hardly get to it for all of the saws that kept showing up. I told him he probably should have said so and a bunch of us could show up and get that remodel done in no time so that he would have some more time for sharpening. He thought that was funny, I'm not sure why. Maybe he saw how bad some of my saws were and thought its unlikely I have any skills to offer.

Anyways while Tom is out of the sharpening business he said there is a fellow over in PA. who is doing a lot of sharpening and called Tom to make sure he was hanging it up. I've forgotten his name but will come up with it if someone else already doesn't know.

Also Tom is not getting out of the business completely. He is still a saw enthusiast and will continue to buy, recondition, and sell them. While they aren't always the fancy or pretty ones they are sharp and cheap. So if anyone needs a good wokring saw Tom still has several hundred that he is keeping for sale and will continue to sell at Patina every year.

>Thanks for the update Dave. since Tom has decided to retire, I have decided to really focus on learning to sharpen saw myself so not to be dependant upon anybody else again. I have a saw vise, and am trying to find a jointer, what other tools do I need besides files?

>You don't really need a manufactered jointer. I juse a jig with a scrap of wood.

The only other tools you need are files

and a saw set.

The first saw I filed I did a crappy job on it and it still cut better than stock.

A rip saw is cake to do, xcut - well let's just say I need a lot more practice.
