Tapered Blades on Hirsch Chisels

Ryan in MN

>Hi All,

Somewhere I ran across a review of hirsch firmer chisels that suggested that the blade tapers slightly from the tang to the edge along the lenght of the blade. Could someone with these chisels please confirm or deny this via means of a dial caliper. I'm also wondering about the Two Cherries as they are supposed to come from the same plant.

Thanks,

Ryan

>Hi Ryan,

I can't help with a caliper test but I can say the Hirsch DO taper slightly. I assume you are thinking of getting some new chisels? If so, follow the advice I was given by one (or more) of esteemed Islanders...try a few different ones out in YOUR hands. The Hirsch feel so great in my mitts I saw no reason to even pick up another brand.

I hope this helps a bit,

Steve Kubien

>Ryan,

My Hirsch chisels are tapered. I did the dial caliper test as you requested. One of the larger ones, maybe 7/8" or so (don't know metric)seemed to taper .050" or so. I'm not sure whether this is good or bad. What do you think? I like the chisels otherwise, although I honestly don't use them.
