Local collector selling all of his planes!

Ernie Miller Topeka

>There is a garage sale here in topeka where a local collector is selling all of his 200+ hand planes the sale starts at 8:00 you can look in the local topeka paper for the address or e-mail me for the address. I did a preview today and his prices are on the high side for a bottom feeder like me but not all that bad compaired to ebay. most are in real good shape. I hope to pick up a set of H&R's but who knows what I will get. just a friendly heads up. I have no financila conection to this sale. I know I cant afford them all so I think it is only fair if a friend buys them for me to barrow.

>I'll be there on my lunch break so leave a few for me.

SWMBO is such a jewel, she is going to the bank to get me more cash than the ATM will shell out. Hopefully, I can add a #46 to my arsenal.

>Sorry to report this but the sale was a dud.

Common stuff at double to triple ebay prices.

I bought a chisel for $4.50.

>Prices were high! 2X ebay I think this guy found and old copy of Walters guide and priced every thing at the top end simple H&R's were $37 ea! but he wasn't all top end I got a big hand full of Stanley 650's for $2-6 and a box of plane parts we are talking bigger than a bananna box full of parts for $25 I thought about a stair saw for $12 but it was user made so I left it I'll make one But the day has just started so I will hit the garage sales a little later in the day.

>You got the best that place had to offer. Rob Victor came in later and the guy offered him a box of rabbet & misc molding planes for $2,000. Rob said he would rather get set of H&R's from Clark & Williams.

>Was anybody buying anything? Most people are tuned into EBay and know market prices.

We had a guy at our local flea market who had the Walter's guide and it didn't matter how badly it was broken, chipped, cracked, it was priced at the top of the Walters price list as mint.

Didn't buy oe single plane from him.,

>Roger, it was $2500 for the three boxes. I think he said there were about 80. Mostly H&R and rabbits.

I was there about 20 min. and other than Roger's chisel the only thing I saw sell was a rake. But there weren't too many people looking. What I remember:

Ohio Tool wooden Jointer - $155

#40 Scrub - $60(?)

60 1/2 - $65

complete type 3(?) #45 - $200

Like they said the hollow/round/rabit/moulding 35 and UP

I don't know/recognize collectable names for the woodies, it did seam awfull high to me. I was primarily wanting a wood smother to try & H&R/Moulding planes. They were in better shape than most I see in this area, but for what he was asking I could have at least half of a C&W that I wouldn't have to re-mouth. I guess to many people are willing to pay those prices to have something to sit on the mantel. If I'm available tomorrow afternoon I might go back to see if he'll lower his prices.

>I know this guy he won't be lowering prices any time soon. He must have sold all of his boxed planes as I didn't see many. Part of the reason they look so good from one of the plow planes that was in the parts box he used a walnut poor filler on all of the planes to make them look better than they realy are. I kan't tell what this one was made for maybe 2X stock T&G plane but not sure as it has no blade or wedge. It will look good on a shelf some where though.

>I went to an "estate" sale a couple of weekends back. I found out later that it was someone in his 80's moving into a senior home, and selling off his extras. The ad mentioned "vintage Stanley planes," which was a tip-off - painted-tote (so post-war, right?) Stanley 5-1/2 for $85! I did pick up some useful little bits for a few $$; went back a week later, with permission from the new owner, hoping to score the remnants for cheap or free, but the previous owner was back, picking up more stuff, as was his right of course. I talked with one son for a while - lots of eye-rolling, because Dad was having trouble giving stuff up (I can relate). I got a little bit of wood for free, but the tools were mostly gone or the previous owner had decided to stick to them.
