Two Cherries Handles...

Tony - Memphis

>I was at one of the local woodworking stores yesterday and was able to pick up a two cherries 1/2" chisel. Man was I surprised at how big the handle was. Maybe I have small hands (no comments please), but gosh those seemed huge! I'm looking for a nice set of chisels and those looked real nice, but I couldn't use those handles. How do the other well accepted chisels rate in handle size? I'd like to get the LN set, but I can't bring myself to pay that much dough.

>Tony, The Two Cherries set I got from Joel are about 1 and 1/16 by 7/8 ( they are more oval than round) and about 4 1/2 inches long. My Marples blue chips ( which are an ideal size for me) feel slightly bigger, though they measure about 1" by 1" and are rectangular. When I visited Joel's store in New York, the Ashley Isles regular chisels were thicker that the Two cherries and as I recall the Ashley Isles american pattern handles were someshat thinner than the Two Cherries- and I picked the Two Cherries because it was in between the two. Can't help with dimensions of other chisels.

>Are you looking at the bevel edge bench chisels or the mortise chisels? The handles on the mortise chisels are huge, but the bench chisel handles seem slightly more slender than average chisels.

Here is a link to the bench chisels, just to make sure we are on the same page! You can also find the mortise chisels on this same site.

>"there is plenty of material to remove"

the sash mortise handle is to heavy in the range of 4 and 6 mm so I reformed the original 6mm and have to make a ferrule for it. The 4mm I replaced with a Nooitgedagt new handle which were for sale in the local toolshop. BTW Nooitgedagt is Irwin tools and I bought the last original spare handle in the shop. That's maybe why there were such a good online offers; The brand has disappeared here in the Netherlands.

>I know they weren't Sorby's, this place doesn't carry those. Guess I didn't look that close, but they did seem awful big in my hand. Oh well.
