Odd Hand Plane?

Randy in Langley

>I'm hoping someone can answer this question for me. I was perusing through an "Antique" Mall this past weekend and came across a hand plane that I have never seen before. It appeared to be a combination between a western style plane and a japanese style plane. The body of the plane and iron were Japanese style, the iron had charactures stamped in to it, which I couldn't decifer because I don't know the language. What persuaded me to think it had a western flavour to it was it had a tote, but the tote was positioned in the front of the plane, ahead of the iron.

Have you seen this before? What style is it? Or was it made possibly by a westerner trying to improve on an eastern style plane?

By the way, the thing was huge, I would guess it was 6" wide 14" long, possibly 2" thick and the entire thing appeared to be made of rosewood.

Any ideas?

>I see a good many planes and tools that are being imported from the Orient,[China, Phillipines, etc.] in Antique Stores and auctions.Imagine they are being brought over with the crappy furniture and etc. that is flooding the U.S. now. While I'm not sure, and could be wrong, sort of sounds like that might be the source of the plane you saw......Todd

There are many more styles of plane than the 2 you list. I would imagine that what you saw was a plane of Eastern origin that wasn't Japanese. Perhaps Chinese, or Korean.

I suspect China is big enough to have regional variations too.
