New saw (Pics)

>Image!

I just took home another D-8 from an antique store, but still at a reasonable price. It's the nicest Disston I've run across yet (in these parts anyhow). It's early 1900's vintage, but I don't think its seen much if any use. The handle is perfect and it has a great etch. 28", 5 pt rip.

>That's the one I've been lookin for ever since I found one on it's last legs.It has about an inch left at the tip and the back teeth run just shy of the handle, which is complete but very much worn.I imagine mine was someone's favorite at one time.Nice find.---Crackerjack

Tease! Tease!

>You neglected to mention how much you paid for it, unless of coarse you'd rather not.

I picked one up just like it for the grand sum of $2 this weekend myself :~), but it is nowhere as nice as yours :~( as the blade is rusted, but I think it will clean up just Jim-Dandy. the handle is in excellent condition to boot. Blade is 28" long, 2 3/4" wide at the toe and 7" wide as measured just in front of the handle, so I don't think it was ever sharpened much. :~)

>Nice saw! Gonna use it, or does it go behind glass? I think I'd put it behind glass myself as a future investment.

How about the rest of Ye? Do use nice saws like this or put them away?

>Todd et al,

I definitely keep a few saws (4) in the "museum". I have few saw that I doubt were used much (if at all). I build wood backdrops for them and hang them on the shop wall much like you would display a prized bass. The rest are users.

Southern Texas gloat...picked up a nice 24" 1896-1917 D8 for the princely sum of $2" yesterday at Canton TX. To quote Ed Sullivan "really big show". I'm in Dallas for business and wound up purchasing the saw from a dealer in from Iowa. Wonder how many places this saw has been?

Geez, you guys and your yahd sale deals...

Luke Herzberg

>Well, lets see here, Todd...I spent 38 bucks on this saw. I know that's probably too big a number for guys like you or Ernie to comprehend when we're talking about tool budgets, so I'll convert that to todd'n'ernie currency --- That's a pair of #2 Stanleys (one in the original unopened box), a full set of Everlastings and an Emmert thrown in for good measure. I think the current exchange rate is $651 U.S. = 1 TE. ; )

Well, I thought it was a pretty good deal anyhow. Tools of any sort aren't that common around here and those in great shape even less so. This one will be a user, too. A saw that nice shouldn't spend its life on the wall, right?

:-)

>I don't think that is a totaly unreasonable price. It is about the going price on ebay and you got to see it live befor buying. I'm paying more for saws this year than I have in the past The one in the auction cos alot to me it came in a till seven saws total and was $23 That's $3 for a saw and I won't be able to seel at least one of them. I should have got them for $5 but some full ran me up for a #12 I wanted the ACME 120

>I just happen to have right here a D8 Rip saw from befor WW 11 that I picked up the other day that had never been sharpened I am sure since it left the factory.Measured from the top of the handle to the bottom of the teeth at the heel straight down is exactly 7 in. This is a 26 in. saw and has the teeth that are of a finer cut[7 ppi] at the tip and then gets course as they go back on the blade till they become 5 1/2 which is what is stamped at the heel.In my experance once one of these Rip saws get sharpened a few times usually all the teeth get filed the same. I think a longer or maybe an older saw would be deeper too when new....The D8 I got the other day I do not think ever got used,Apple handle is dead Mint with 100% finish and is just beautiful looking like the day it left the factory, but unfortunaly due to poor storage the blade has become stained,[but not pitted at all] somwhat....I figured it was worth the $3 I paid for it.....Todd

I know you never get tired of hearing this but..

Bob Hackett

>you suck.

Mainely,Bob-Who would have to fire up the wayback machine to find something like that here in Maine. The rule up here is"Use it up,burn it out, make it do,or do without".I`ve never seen anyone say this with even a hint of a smile on thier face.

>Thanks Todd,

although I typed in my question poorly, you got it right. So the Thumbhole D8 I got for a lot more money via e-bay seems to be in a pretty unused state. Nice.

Christof.

How much does it measure at the toe?

>I have a saw pretty much a twin to yours. I paid $8 for it but I sure wouldn't sell it for $38. It's worth a lot more to me. You've got a fine tool at a very reasonable price.
