shop and bench pics *LINK*

Luke Herzberg

>I figured out about a week ago that earthlink gives me 10meg of webspace for posting whatever crap I want, so I thought I'd give it a try with some shop photos. Now bear in mind that I have no clue about creating websites or html or anything of the like, but here is the link to the photo portion.

I can't even figure out how to add text yet, so I'll describe here...there's a couple shots of the shop, self explanatory. All those photos that get posted of lab-like cleanliness in shops will be balanced nicely by mine.

There is a couple pictures of my bench in progress (still far from done, but closer), a photo of a box I began as dovetail practice in red oak and another of an actual completed project, albeit puny: A storage box for my 4' straight edge (a good toy that everyone should have).

Enjoy my happenin' site. I think it tilts after a gig of traffic. : )

How many views allowed?

Ted Owen, Pittsburgh

>Luke, some sites limit the number of views. When someone clicks after the limit, an error message results. IIRC, Geocities is an example.

I don't know about Earthlink, but you may want to ask them if you plan to spend much time setting it up.

Best, Ted

I especially like(covet) that old drill press!

Thanks for the pictures. I love seeing other folks' shops

>Hi Luke. It's always good to see lots of chips on the floor, projects upside down being worked on, etc. About the balancing thing...I think you may have tilted things just a bit your way :>))

Did you make the box for your straight edge? I hang mine vertically on the wall. Are you making drawers for the bench? I appreciate it if you could share some of your thoughts regarding the constructgion details of your bench..pardon me if you've already done this. I haven't searched the archives...only one cup of coffee down at this hour ;?)!!

>Hi Frank, somebody's got to be the balance eh? I suspect that more shops look like this then labs...or I could be wrong : ).

I made the straight edge box. It is Doug Fir (my favorite). It started as an old chunk of 2x6 with nice grain that I ripped in half. I lined it with material from one of those gun socks to help prevent rust.

The bench is also Doug fir. It is about 3 7/8" thick and the legs are mortised into the top. It will have sled feet also and will be 32" high. I drilled through the bench top and installed a handfull of threaded rods to keep the works toghether (don't know if that was good, bad, necessary or otherwise). I eventually will have drawers underneath as well, which will be further dovetail practice for me. In the photos you can see some purpleheart leaning against the wall...I intend to use that as the working surface on the bench top. I have an old front vice that will go on also. I am wishing now that I had incorporated a tail vice into the design (live and learn), but that will be for a future bench.

A lot of the wood I am using is old or recycled in one manner or another. The design on the bench has been constantly evolving as I go, partly because of my changing skills (or lack of), different wants in the finished product or new realizations about what works and what don't!

>Luke,

thanks for sharing pics of your shop, as compared to your I have one of those "lab-shops". ;~) Once you get your bench finished it'll make a huge difference in your organization.

On a serious note thoe Luky Ol' boy, with the shop in that much of dissary you're an accident waiting to happen. A Clean shop is a Safe shop and a Sage shop is a Happy shop. Do be careful whilst working in there, especially if you're running any power tools. Don't be mad at me for saying this, I can't help it. I was a Safety Petty Officer for my squadron and it was my job to look for accidents waiting to happen and prevent them. If an accident did happen it was my job to ensure it didn't happen again. Hurt sailors are unproductive, and put more work on the shoulders of the others, so Safety is preached 27/7 in the Navy and I am happy for it.

>Point well taken, Todd. The shop kinda is at its low point organization-wise right now. Its mainly hand tools that I'm using (I think the TS has gotten fired up a couple times in the past year). When the bench is done, its drawers will be my primary tool storage. The tools that have no home right now just get stacked. I need to get some sort of racks going for my wood pile too.

I don't mean to disparage those clean shop folks...its my preference as well ;-).

BTW, is 27/7 some old Navy expression? Does that mean you guys get 13% more work done in a day?

Thanks,

Luke

Truly frightening!

Steve Kubien

>Luke,

I have the same Craftsman table saw (more thoroughly covered though), my drill press is almost as old (with no cover over the pulley's), my braces are arranged the exact same way (for now) and I have just as much "stuff" (garbage, junk, crappola) as you do.

Do you come from Polish lineage because I am thinking we must be related somehow?

Glad-I'm-not-alone,

Steve Kubien

>Ted, from Luke's description, this is not one of those free websites, but is the space that he gets as a part of his subscription to his ISP. If that is the case, it is usually only limited by the bandwidth limit that is put on personal web pages.

An advantage to this

Todd O. Cronkhite Native of Maine

>Feeding off of what Derek said, not only if Luke where to wear the proper colors to camoflage himself in the shop, having a disarayed shop probably makes it a whole lot easier to sneak in new rust eh Luke? Good thinking my man, you're a genius! Tomorrow's project will be to imitate Lukes shop. Should take about 15 minutes, as I'm only about 2 steps above him myself. ;~)

Luke, for a while I used those shallow Coke Cola trays to store tools until I could build better storage. The worked great too.

27/7? Opps meant 24/7, tho many a' time I think a Navy day was at least 27 hours long. :~( I heard tell on time that by the time a person spends 20 years in the Navy he/she'll have put in the equivalaany of 60 years civilian time. I can believe it too.
