"Thistle" Brand?

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>I stopped by a junk shop I rarely visit today, and noticed, in a pile of woodies on the floor, a coffin smoother with a tapered iron and cap, but no wedge. The iron's mark is pretty faint under the grunge, but seems to say, "Thistle Brand." Is this (a) a great brand, (b) a horrid one, or (c) an unknown one?

After reading all the paeans to woodies here, I'm thinking, if the price is right (say, $15; and don't tell me about how you can pick them up for ten cents, Todd, it just ain't so out here), that it might be worth picking up as a future project plane (make wedge, tune up, fiddle with), but there seems no point unless the iron's likely to be a good 'un.

>The Thistle Brand was the mark used in all my planes from the Auburn Tool Co.I believe this company also produced irons for the Ogontz Tool planes as well.I`ve been very happy with all the tools I own from both but especially the Auburns. If the iron has any life left in it I`d say go for it.As long as the stock has no glaring defects such as cracked cheeks or horrible splits thru the sole I always have had good luck putting these old work horses back in service.

Bob Smalser is planning to post another one of his exceptional lessons on doing just this sort of thing here directly so this may be a truely timely find.

Who knows, you may end up with a plane that you will be a fond of as I am of my "frankenplane".It may not be pretty, but there`s not much(short of smoothing highly figured wood)it can`t do.It`s one sweet, hardworking plane.
