Don't read until visiting Lee Valley website

Michael Kieta

>Okay, how many of us believed the full inch thick blade? And for a follow-up, after the additional information, How many are still thinking...Hmmmm, that might be worth trying...? Okay Rob, you got me!

Michael in Germany (but leaving for a week in Ireland tomorrow morning)

What can I say?

>He got me too :~( Not for long, but long enough. And after I'd wondered right at the start if the whole thing wasn't going to be an April Fool's too. How embarassing... Rob, you're having waaaayy too much fun with this!

Maybe.......

Eric Hedberg

>I don't know guys/gals, maybe the joke's on us. You know, I wouldn't put it past Rob to post this as a yuk and then ship it as the final product. Perhaps the patent is for thick blades with integral fingertip adjustments (although the lever cap seems like a bit of overkill). I'm putting it on my wish list with the hope that the price isn't a "joke".

Congrats to the Veritas design team. Who says you guys/gals don't know "Jack" about plane design.

>... I promise to post more details on this plane later today - I think I owe everyone here that...

I'll also say a few things about the "other" plane, which will actually hit the streets first, about May 15th.

And - to be consistent, I'll even let out a new tease, just for you!

BTW - thanks to Ellis for letting me foist this on y'all - hopefully, it got Ted too....'cause he didn't know it wasn't real....

>I had the good fortune to be able to try the prototype of this plane. It gave a glass smooth finish with no tearout on a piece of curly ebony burl. The only problem was that it's so heavy I had to clamp it upsidedown in my bench and run the wood over it.

HUGE Veritas Plane Price Increase

Russell Seaton

>Not sure what you are talking about in this thread, and don't care.

But I did look at the Veritas planes on the Lee Valley site, and saw roughly a 50% price increase across the board. Veritas planes are now priced about the same as Lie-Nielsen planes.

I doubt this is an April Fool's joke.

Yes... that's

Christopher Fitch @ Memphis

>very disturbing...

I did a double take when I saw them... and then I had to make sure I did not accidentally change my default currency to Canadian dollars...

I didn't

I wonder why they went up?

Check the currency that you are using, US$ or Can$.

>I don't know if there has been a price increase but I checked out the prices. Seems to be very competitively priced when compared to LN.

I really hope this is an attempt at an April Fool's joke or that you browsed the Canadian prices.

For the record here are the prices in US dollars...

LV 4 1/2 $179

LN 4 1/2 $300

LV 5 1/4 $189

LN 5 1/4 $285

LV 6 $219

LN 6 $350

Pretty Funny

Mark Meier (Ann Arbor, MI)

>That was good. Lets see, 12 degree bed angle, ~60 degree cutter angle, 2 degree micro bevel... wow I bet that'd be hard to push! And how long would the bevel be if re-ground to 25 degree. (About 2.4" I think.)

As far as the "pyramidal storage box" for the cutter... that's a great idea. What about taking it further to offer the "Veritas Shop Roof"? They could market a whole new shop roof that would improve every edge in the shop as well as all the work done inside.

You're the first....

Rob Lee

>... to comment on how steep the bevel on the 1" thick blade was...

We had to do it that way so the lever cap would still bear on the top of the blade...as you point out - a 25 degree bevel would run a long way!

Sharp eyes...!

Aussie prices...

GolfSteve in Calgary

>Rob, (I'm back in Australia at the moment), it's been two years since I noticed how high the price of Veritas planes are in Australia. Has any Australian retailer found a way to buy your planes at wholesale prices so that your Aussie customers can afford a Veritas plane? The last time I was in Carbatec it looked like they have basically abandoned the Veritas plane line; there was one lonely 4-1/2 sitting in the far corner of a display case behind all the Lie Nielsen's and Clifton's.

I should start bringing over three or four planes in my backpack each trip, sell them locally to make a few bucks and to help a few Diggers out.

As an aside, the Carbatec store in Brisbane still has a Lee Valley Boggs Concave spokeshave in the display case. That was one nice looking tool. I bought your new spokeshaves but they don't look anywhere near as good as the old version.

Cheers,

Steven

Plane model question

Did LV actually make one of these planes just for the fun of it, or are the pictures on the LV website all a bunch of computer generated jiggery-pokery?

I am outraged!

Patrick Gibbons, Houston, TX

>For many years now I have toiled at inventing tools. Tools for master craftsmen. Tools for industry. Tools for work. Everytime I was in the final finishing phase, lo and behold, Lee Valley/Veritas introduces my tools on their catalogs. I've tried to keep those Canadians from reading my mind by wrapping aluminum foil around my head but to no avail. And now. My masterpiece. My greatest creation. Stolen! The ultra thick blade was my idea. Dubbya will hear about this. I know an act of terrorism when I see it. What planet is Canada anyway?
