>The No 12 Disston with no carving on the handle is a No. 9 Disston. Same shaped handle however; just no wheat carving.

>Thanks for the info. I bought the saw and it says #12 it's the cleanest shinest most perfect etch I have ever seen on a saw. I'll date it later in the day

>I have a few #12s with the wheat handles, and they're my favorite saws, but I'd much prefer the uncarved handles. You can barely read the etch on most of my saws, so sounds like a beauty, Ernie.

I don't get the wheat handle thing, I guess. Worse, though, is the wheat pattern gold-stamped on a new flat handled saw. I've got a couple of those that need replacement handles.

>My understanding is that the use of wheat on a saw handle, usually as a carving, relates to the fact that wheat was perhaps the most important, productive result of agriculture. As in woodworking, there is hard work in farming, but in a good year, the harvest can be bountiful. Thus, it is a subtle way of saying this saw is a worthy tool and in the hands of a craftsman it will be productive and produce superior work. We have other customs that reflect the tie with agriculture and bountiful harvests. Rice, thrown at a wedding, is a reminder that in a new life together, the bride and groom are expected to produce their own bountiful harvest (children) to carry on the family name and to insure a bright future.

>I just find it tacky and cheap in its execution, I suppose. And beyond aesthetics, I don't like the way it feels in my hand. Although I'm just grousing more than usual, I occasionally need to be reminded that there are reasons for things that transcend my own ephemeral selfish prejudices.

>Here is a picture why is it any little spot shows up like all get out in the pictures but in person they are hardly visable? couple paint flecks on the handle but that will flick off. I never can get an etch to show in a picture either this one is deep.

>It sure looks like a #12 blade with a D-8 handle.

The #12 did not have a let-in handle, so somebody must have modified the blade to fit the D-8 handle. You should be able to tell pretty quickly if you take the handle off.

Looks like a great user saw!

>I would bet dollars to doughnuts that this saw came with this handle. every thing matches the nut holes the blade fits the wood perfect the staining of the steel says it's been like this for ever. and it's sharp. every saw in the till except the 240 is screaming sharp. Mysteries are fun I have a #12 handle but doubt I will change it out.

I agree ....

>with Ted , I am sure the oiginal handle was replaced probably during the working life of the saw with one off most probably a D8.If the handle was taken off another saw when you take the handle off the holes in the blade will show where they were filed or redrilled to match the D8 handle's holes. But also Disston sold handle blanks that were not drilled at the factory so that you could fit them to your blade by drilling holes in the handle that matched the blades instead of modifying the blade to fit the handle.....Kind of hard to see in the photo but the handle looks to me to be perhaps of newer vintage then the no.12 blade too. Very common to see replaced handles and sometimes it can be a little hard to tell....I'd put the correct no.12 handle on if you have one to make the saw right....Todd

>You are both right it has been cut down about 1 1/2" I can barly see where the top of the handle used to be. the handle I have will not work the way it is cut.
