Woodworking in Washington DC - Furniture & Lecture *LINK*

Dave (Arlington, VA)

>Hi All -

For both the locals and those of you who may be visiting our nation's capital this year, I thought I'd let everyone know that the Renwick Gallery (part of the Smithsonian) starts an exhibition next week of American furniture from its own collection.

The exhibition is called, "Right at Home: American Studio Furniture" and it runs from -- April 2, 2004 through Jan. 17, 2005.

The blurb for the exhibition says that this exhibition highlights works that are for the most part functional, although in some cases the idea of utility is stretched considerably. These custom-designed pieces range in conception and style from the elegant furniture of Sam Maloof to the bold, garishly colorful works of Richard Ford, who is influenced by cartoons. Other artists included in this exhibition are Rosanne Sommerson, Alphonse Mattia, John Cederquist, and Stephen Courtney.

I must confess, that I don't know many of these people, but I'm interested nonetheless.

Also for most of the Wednesdays and Sundays between at least next week and the middle of July they are having a variety of furniture related demonstrations and lectures.

I'll post a link to the Renwick below. Check it out if this is of interest. If you see anyone listed of particular note, you might let us all know just in case we're free (or might otherwise be able to make ourselves free) to catch the demonstration or lecture.

Regards -

Dave

Did you happen to stumble across this page? *LINK*

Dave (Arlington, VA)

>Hi John -

I agree the information is thin. As you were searching through the site, did you by chance find the page I've linked to below with the listing of the demonstrations and lectures? This page has the woodworking/furniture stuff mixed in with other gallery offerings during this time period - so it is a bit confusing.

If you find out more information, I'd love to hear about it!

Dave

>No, I had missed that, but it is exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately, this Friday is already shot--good thing it is here for a few months....

Thanks again!
