>I have became addicted to handplanes! Does anyone know a good source for old Stanleys besides ebay? I am mostly interested in the corrugated planes and am tired of the time spent trying to "win" one. Did Stanley make a 4 1/2C?

>As they say around here, you are standing on a very slippery slope. This new addiction of yours leads you further astray into the use and acquisition of other hand tools like saws, braces, etc. Welcome to the club!

I have a number of metal and wood planes. However, Most of the metal planes were acquired from Ebay. There are local tool swap meets twice a year but I usually miss them for one reason or another. The prices in the local antique stores are out of sight.

Bob Salser has a thread posted on this forum and others that shows him converting a Stanley 4-1/2C, type 11 to be a 50 Degree frog. I hope that that answers your question.

You might find that, in addition to the earlier Stanley's, both Miller Falls and Sargent, made quality hand plane. In both cases, the earlier models were of a higher quality then the latter years; same for Stanley.

>Tom,

I'd join the Mid-West Tool Collectors Association (it's actually a national group). Their regional tool swap meets are astonishing. Good prices and everything you want in one place.

My other recommendation is to join the "oldtools" listserv also known as "The Porch." It's an e-mail discussion group. On the first of every month a good number of the members put up their surplus items for sale to fellow members at brother-in-law prices.

Check out the archive of messages for a sample here:

Plane buying by wandering around

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>Lots of us got our start with planes by hitting garage and estate sales, a pastime known as "rust hunting" (and, for those who jump on the lowest price stuff even if it means hours of cleanup, "bottom feeding"). In many, though not all, parts of the country, this is still a perfectly workable method for common planes, though less useful for the specialty stuff.

There is a dealer I can vouch for personally, having bought several items from him. Sandy Moss. Perfectly reliable, honest, friendly, good descriptions, and fair prices. Responsive if you have questions.

Look him up here.

Contact Todd

Bill Tindall, E. TN

>contact Todd Hughes, this Forum. You will get what you pay for. If you don't know what constitutes a serviciable plane, or you are buying sight unseen, then buy from someone knowledgable. They will spot problems that you might not. Collectors do not necessarily know a good working plane. they don't worry about flat soles, and other attributes that affect the utility of the plane.

>I don't know where you live in Arkansas, but if you have any interest in wooden hand planes, you should give Bill Clark a call in Eureka Springs. You can probably set up a time to go by and meet him and take a look at their wares.

If he doesn't have what you are looking for on hand, the suggestion above to check out the Old Tools is also a good one. Just take a look at one of the archives sites for the first few days of the month, and a ~half-dozen people will post lists.

>Tom,

Are you familiar with Electrolysis? If you're gonna turn into a rust hunter I advise you to learn how to "zap" rust. WOOD magazine, Sept '93 issue page 74 had the best article on it that I've ever come across. The only thing different I do than what the articles says is to use Washing Soda instead of Lye. I mixed up a 35 gallon batch this weekend and zapped an entire Stanley # 385 miter box. Worked great!

Welcome to the Bright Side, and look forward to seeing on the 'Slope
