LF : Opinions on Two Cherries mortise chisels

Stephen in Ottawa

>I am looking for opinions from people who've used Two Cherries mortise chisels. I'm contemplating getting the 8mm chisel ( 5/16" ).

- What's the edge retention like? How often does it need touching up in NA hard woods?

- What's the quality of the grind on the edge faces and back face. The way I see it, a mortise chisel has not one but three cutting edges. The intersection of each of the two side faces with the bevel face forms an edge each of which would define a side wall of the mortise when the chisel is used to chop a mortise. Ofcourse the bevel and back of the chisel form the main cutting edge.

- In general, what's your opinion of the tool?

Thanks,

- Stephen

Try one out! *LINK*

>Hello, again, Stephen!

I see you are still undecided on the mortise chisel. How about I send you one and you try it out? If you don't like it, you can return it to us. If you do, you can pay for it and we'll cover the postage. And you can let the others know how you like it.

The metal used in the Two Cherry is excellent and hold it's edge very well. The problem I have with it however, is it's just to big...the handle diameter is very large and the blade two thick. I much prefer using and old chisel, not only do they hold an edge well, they have a much better feel as result of the smaller handles and tapered blades.

>Hello John,

what about a ECE, steel-quality seems to be the same, but the handle is classic style.

BTW: Although I have small hands the Two-Cherries work for me, but as you I prefer normal handles. I presume the TwoCherries are designed for heav duty outdoor work.

I purchased the ECE motise chisel and ended up sending it back. Although the steel has a great reputation for it's performance, I was really disappointed in the workmanship of both the blade & handle on the chisel I received.

>Must have been a bad one. Mine was good. No quality dieffernce to Two cherries in Handle and blade. But perhaps others can contribute their experiences, so that we can get a clearer picture.

The handle problem

Bill Tindall, E. TN

>the steel is fine.the only thing we have seen better is the 3V steel we used for our homemade chisels. We have some picture comparisons of edge retention of two cherries about 6 months ago on this forum. You will not find the edge lacking in durability when sharpened at 35 degrees..

The handle comes covered with some polymer stuff. It looks like a good looking woman with too much makeup. It will come off with some difficulty. For me the handle is too big and because it is round it lacks any tactile feel of orientation. I mowed the sides off on the band saw and filed it smooth again. The modified handle felt good and I could tell what way it was pointed.

LN Mortise Chisels

Don Thompson, Cutler Ridge, South of Miami FL

>Yes, but, they promised the bench chisels in time for Christmas of 2002. I love their tools, and they seem like very nice people, and give great service, but I wonder when we will actually see the LN mortise chisels offered for sale.

>What are shipping now are their bevel edge bench chiselshope to have mine soon. To my knowledge, there is not even a projected date for mortice chisel availability, though L-N has commmitted to their eventual production.
