Will 45 blades fit a 46?

Todd O. Cronkhite Native of Maine

>I didn't realize until just recently that the blades in a #46 sit in the plane at a skew. I'm thinking that would be better than the way they sit in a 45 as they'd be cutting with more of a shearing motion. I'm wondering if the blades from a 45 will fit a 46 or if I'd have to search for special 46 blades. Actually I think they will, I'm just looking for confirmation.

No 45 blades will not fit the 46, because of the skew. You see the sides of the blades are skewed also so the can "groove vertically dude". SJBT carries a set of replacement blades for the 46 BTW. You can find them on the 'bay sometimes also, or check with some tool dealers.

>Hey Todd. How ya doing'? Did you know I have a 46? I only have one iron. If you order from SJTC, let me know how they work. I'd love to have a full set.

45 or 46 prefence?

Todd O. Cronkhite Native of Maine

>O.K., so now I know that the blades of a 45 won't fit a 46, so it is good that I asked eh? Did anybody else not know this?

Now than, as I said in my first post I think that the 46 would be a better all around tool that the 45 due to the skewed cutters. Are the any 45/46 users out there who'd say I wrong? Any situations where a 45 would be better than a 46?

I have a nice complete 45, but no cutters, so I am thinking that instead of spend $$ on 45 blades I'd be better off looking for a decent 46 and its cutters instead.

>It's my understanding that the Clifton multiplane uses identical cutters to the 45. I don't know about the cost, but that's a source for a new set.

Different animals Todd...

Scott Burr in Ben Lomond CA

>The 45 is a "comb" plane. It can cut grooves, do profiles and molding work. The 46 (or 47 for that matter) is a grooving plane. Plane and simple it does nothing else. That's why I feel it does an excellent job on grooves. It was designed to do 1 thing only.

>Todd, I think the versatility of the 46 is limited only by the available cutters. I have 3 or 4 different beading/reading cutters for my 45 but have never seen any offered for the 46. Same goes for fluting cutters, etc.

The 46 is much better at cutting grooves than the 45 is. A P. Leach says, "...the 46 will cut dadoes around the 45."...or something to that effect. I don't know if the 46 would perform better than the 45 given equality of cutters but I strongly suspect that it would. Jim Reed has made a set of cutters for the 46....he may chime in here on the feasibility of making molding cutters for the 46?? Jim, you there??

>Ahhhhhhhhh well than, sounds like the 46 is my plane as all I want it for is to cut grooves and dados. Going to a MWTCA meet next month, so I'll keep my eyes peeled for 46 stuff. Perhaps I'll take my 45 along and see if I can trade it, I got a good deal on it, so I should be able to at least get out of it what I have in it in a swapping deal. I suspect that a 46 probably goes for more $$$ than a 45 eh? Kinda' hate to part with a tool tho. Decisions, decisions.

Here I am!!

jim_reed@marietta

>The #46 is really a dado and rabbet plane. The idea for #46 beaders is interesting. With #45 beaders tearout is a problem--skew cutting may nix that problem. I am curious enough to knock one out to try. I have a batch leaving for heater this week. By the way, that batch will include a matched pair of SLIDING DOVETAIL CUTTERS (!!!) I designed for the #46. I think the #46 is Stanley's most underrated plane. If you ever use one with a good (they are hard to find) blade, you will use nothing else.

>Todd, I think the cost difference between the two will depend largely on condition. Very Good to Fine 45's w/box, etc. seem to bring around $250-$300. A complete 46 recently sold on ebay for over $600.

When you buy a Good to Very Good 46 with one cutter in it you will probably spend around $120 - $150. (ebay) A set of original cutters w/box will bring a premium well over what the plane brings. I've never attended a WW show so I don't know what that market is like.

For a user 46, I think one of the aftermarket cutter suppliers is the way to go.

>Todd, I use my 46 for dados, works like a dream. I've got a Record 044 that is sweet for grooves, so I've never really tried the No. 46 for grooves. With the skewed blade, the 46 is easy to use.

Sliding dovetail set for #46

jim_reed@marietta

>The cutter set is finished and is in the heat treating box. Should return the first week of April for sharpening and testing. I am building a slant front secretary desk with sliding dovetails for the drawer frames. Cut them with a tailed router and batten, but had a few hiccups which resulted in bumps. It took me quite a while to smoothe things out with shoulder plane and chisel. I think this blade set is just the ticket for shaving and fitting. More news later. Thanks for your interest. The #46 is Stanley's best untold story.
