>I have the veritas precision honing guide. When I clamp on SOME of my chisels to set at 25* the blade seems to short to let the clamp tighten on the blade far enough back to get low enough to lay in the guide? at 25*. All stanley chisels but not a set. What am I missing? Im sure chisels have never been ground back. The chisels are put in the guide right back to front. thanks for input

>In my experience, new Stanley chisels are shorter than normal (Marples/Two Cherries are longer). I even have to stretch my universal guide to make the stanley chisels long enough. If they have a decent hollow grind, they are pretty easy to hone freehand on the sandpaper.

>Chisel length will make no difference at all - it is the distance from the guide to the stone that counts.

Check you are using the guide the right (or at least the same) way round each time. The roller is offset w.r.t. the hold down screw and one way round the length of chisel that protrudes from the guide (screw position) is longer than the other way round.
