High Angle Frog vs Standard

Rick - in Jackson,TN

>Leaning more and more towards, or better said, sliding down the slope, to purchase either a LN 4 or 4 1/2. I understand that the high angle frog beds the blade at 50 degrees for wood with a hard to plane grain. I have read a number of posts and articles regarding the HA frog, but never saw anything on how a HA frog works on wood without a change in grain direction, etc. or did I miss something.

So since I can consider only one plane, does the HA frog cover all applications, or should I just stay with the standard and on the rare occasion I run into tough grain, deal with it the best I can. Thanks for the opinions,

Rick

A lower cost option

Rossmoor Galoot

>Check out the thread below concerning the Veritas smoother with both types of blades for a much less expensive alternative. I have nothing against LN, its just that cost is obviously a factor in your decision and Lee Valley offers a more economical alternative. I have the LV low angle smoother and love it and will be ordering the second blade shortly.

>I am lucky enought to have both the LV low angle and LN 4.5 no high angle frog. About 70% of the time the LV gets used 20% the LN and 10% gets scraped. I pretty much use tiger maple and cherry. IMO touching up the iron and keeping it as sharp as possible and throat closed has more to do with keeping tearout to a minimum. Darrell had a great idea of keeping scraps of nasty grained woods to test your planes and scrapers on after sharpening.

>The LN with high angle frog, cryo blade, and the new chip breaker is a different animal than a standard LN 4 or 4-1/2 - it's my go-to plane for nasty wood.

Re: cost, the LV is $175 and the LN is $255 with the new C/B. You have to decide for yourself as to whether the extra level of performance is worth the $80. For me, yes.

>Hi Bob, they do and you will be impressed at the tight tolerances, best in the industry, just ask me! $75 USD for either the 2" (fits #4 & #5) or the 2 3/8" (fits the 4 1/2, 5 1/2, 6 and 7). Just loosen the frog retaining screws to swap the frogs.

Re: Options

>For wood that's prone to tearout, you need a high effective cutting angle.

Ways to achieve this:

* Bevel down plane with fixed, high bedding angle, (e.g. a Steve Knight woodie, or an infill)

* Bevel down plane with adjustable bedding angle - this would be a LN with "both" frogs.

* Bevel down plane with "normal" bedding angle, and back bevelled blade.

* Bevel up plane (AKA "low angle") and a "suitable" bevel on the blade.

The last 2 options can achieve an extra effective cutting angle at the cost of an extra blade, not an extra casting, or an extra plane.

>When I used to do boatyard work, I'd take the LN jack, a 60-1/2, and a few spare blades, plus an assortment of scrapers for those really tight places. You don't really need more than a plane or two to get the job done - it's just more convienient.

Mahogany place in Milan?

>I see we are almost sort of neighbors...have you ever dealt with that Mahogany dealer in Milan? Just wondering about them. Can't recall the name off hand.

>I have to agree with you Todd. I ordered the 4 1/2 w/50 deg frog and improved chip breaker. It's fantastic! Its stupendous! It can tame the meanest, wildest, gnarylist jungle wood out there But wait theres more! It actually works as a good smoother for more domesticated woods too. Gee, do you think I like it?

>hi Tony, I talked to him after I got his name from Woodfinder. being new to the area after moving down from Cincinnati, I am still looking for a good wood source. I can't recall the price he gave me for some 8/4, but I will check back and see if I can find it. I did however get some very nice quater sawn WO at Colco last weekend, not a bad price I guess considering the alternative, I got 4/4 for $7.20 S2S. Stay in touch, I go either there, or The Woodwork Shop. Rick
