>I seem to have a little trouble with this bit about not hunting for any more tools. did you slip away for a few weeks while we weren't watching and enter tool detox? It's not that I doubt the veracity of that statement, but......

>I also sent an email to John asking about the book. Here is the response I got from John:

Dear Stanley enthusiast.... Thanks for your interest. Sorry for the delay, but have been busy settling my Mothers estate. The "big Stanley book" is still under extensive revision, but is nearing complition and hope to have it ready later this summer. If you wish to be added to my database and be sent a flyer by snail mail, then by all means, please forward your mailing address so I can be sure to let you know when it is available and ordering details, etc. when ready to ship. In the meantime, I have the new 2004 pocket price guide in stock. (270 pages) The price is $12.00 postpaid. Sincerely, John P.S. Just unearthed a few full color 1880's vintage Stanley poster re-prints from 1994. They are limited and cost $10 folded (as they came originally from Stanley when printed) or can ship rolled in a tube for $12, including postage. >>> My phone number and mailing address are listed on my website >> www.thetoolmerchant.com

Quitting tools is easy!

In the absence of Roger's response...

>I realized a few years ago that I'd reached tool sufficiency on automotive and general mechanical tools. Not that there aren't such tools I don't own, and not that I don't curse at times because I don't own some particular tool. But I'd reached the point that I could do 90 - 95% of the work I needed to do without resorting to Vise Grips (it's really astonishing how infrequently I use them now; there was a time when I might as well have riveted a pair into my hand).

I can visualize reaching the same point with woodworking tools. Haven't reached it yet; just, I can visualize that point. It's about 50 tools away.

>Are you sure that you didn't forget a couple 0's in that total number of tools you need? To stand up for my friend Roger he is switching from the tool collector to the tool user and has most tools in mulipuls.

>Sorry I didn't get back here for a quick answer.

Over the past couple of years, I've spent much more time buying, selling and playing with tools than woodworking. It's been a lot of fun and very educational but I'd like to spend more time using the tools now.

Now when Ernie calls me up and tells me there is an auction 6 miles from my office with a Chaplin's Improved No. 8 (something I had never seen in person), I have to check that out.

>I sure wouldn't want it as a user. The mouth is huge with no way to close it. The frog mounting is very flimsy. I'll put a report with pictures on my website soon.
