Winchester Fore Plane

John Vancil in Silverdale, Wa

>I was given a Winchester fore plane. And I am curious as to mamufactured the planes for Winchester? Because the chip breaker is a Stanley and it is a 1/4 inch short of the cutting edge of the blade when adjusted properly. Also the blade was made by Union Carbide and .113 thick. Are they any good because the back of the blade has some pitting.

Thanks for any information. John

>Stanley made many (all?) of the Winchester planes, including a "Bedrock" series that was based on the early, round-sided Bedrocks.

What you may have is a replacement chip breaker that came off a transitional plane instead of a cast iron one. The transitional plane chip breakers had a different end-to-adjuster-notch length than the cast iron planes had.

Of course, it helps immensely that it has my dad's initials inscribed on the cheek.
