Re-Handling tools

Jim Doughty, handcrafter of fine firewood

>Hi Everyone,

I've got a lovely collection of rust, I mean old hand tools, that I'm in the process of cleaning up and making useful again. In the collection are some chisels, a draw knife, etc. that need new handles. I can turn new handles, but don't know diddley about removing/remounting the handles and ferrules. Or what holds the whole mess together in the first place. Any advice or pointing in the right direction for reference would be appreciated. TIA

>For socket chisels I use English boxwood. Use silly putty from Toys-or-Us or similar product to "cast" a mold of the interior of the socket and obtain measurments from that as you turn the replacement handle. Very easy to do. Try and find a few old handles as models. I had a few, many of which were beyond use. One was of a pattern and size I really liked. It has become my "signature" series. Scale the size to match the tool.

>How come you didn't come out with that tip about 5 years ago when I averaged about 15 test fittings per handle to get the tapers to fit. Seriously though, that's a great way to do it and beats the test fit ad nauseum all to hell.

>For tang type's you just drill under size hole, wrap the business end of tool in wet rag and heat the tang and "burn it on". May have to do this couple times depending on hole size you started with but when you get to last 1/8",pull it apart and let things cool and then drive the handle on.

Ferrel's can be bought or made out of copper or brass pipe.

For the socket type's,several things work, make a pattern out of tin foil, use dowels for small and large to get taper, and my fav is just to mark inside of socket with grease pencil and turn the taper till you get the taper.

And in the process of doing these you can add leather to bolster for mortice chisels and turn a tenion and add leather at end if you like.

Choice of wood, well i like to use different one depending on use and do like to vary shape, just makes it easy for me to know which tool i want to pick up.

Handle making is a art at times, but nothing like making a new handle that works the way you want.

Silly Putty

>Find your Silly Putty of whatever type modeling clay you use is sticking in the socket? Give the socket a short spray of Pam or other brand cooking vegetable oil spray before using the putty. This may shorten the useful life of the putty but...

>Thanks guys, that should get me started. And the clay idea will come in handy.
