Dating Stanley 78 planes

Sanford Levy

>Hi, I have bought a few Stanley bench planes, often on ebay, and seem to be able to figure out pretty well how to date them using the flow chart everyone uses for Stanley's. But what about Stanley 78's? I know they still (still?) make them and do not want to end up with a recent one. All I can tell from the Blood and Gore site is that they added a depth adjustment lever in 1925 and the handles had fish scales around 1910. But suppose it has the lever, is there any way to tell (especially from a picture) whether it is 1925 versus 1975 or 1995? I notice some ads on ebay mention patent dates cast in the plane. Does the present of a patent date help date the 78's? Is there a web site with a flow chart for the 78's. Thanks for any help! It seems someone out there knows something since people are bidding very different amounts for what look to be identical planes! Sanford

Why a 78?

>You really need to look at the Record 778. It has 2 fence rods and a better blade adjuster than the Stanley 78. A much better plane though a few $$ more than a Stanley IMHO.

>Thanks for the advice Scott. I have actually never seen the 778, though I have seen references to it. I have not seen one for sale on ebay, which is where I have bought most of my other hand tools. (I have almost never found any tools for sale where I live.) I seem to remember reading Record still makes the 778. Is the present version any good? Or should I just look for an old one? Thanks!

>As usuall the older ones are somewhat better. I've heard good things about the newer ones. The big problem is that Record factory in England has closed it's doors. All record vices and maybe planes (if they will still be making them) will be made in china now.

>Closest I can find to a type study is here. The modern ones will have Made in England on them, but I don't think it makes much difference to their usability when they're made. I'd add my vote to the two fence rod types like the Record #778, WS #A78 and the Woden #W78 for sheer ease of use.

>Here is a link to a completed auction for a Record 778. I bought one there last year. They are not as common as Stanley 78s, but they do come up for sale.
