Neandercar finished *PICS* *LINK*

Rob Brophy Niagara Falls

>It was a long week, but the Neandercar is finished. For those who missed my first posting about this project: it's a prop for a stage play, made out of wood & steel (using a lot of Neanderthal tools), sitting on an old electric golf cart. The project took six weeks from start to finish.

Just to the right of the car is one of the handiest handtools ever made...the Hossfeld Bender. In the photo it is set up for bending right angles in flat bar, but it with different dies it can bend metal pipe, tube, or angle iron into just about any shape imaginable. My new LV LA block plane saw its first use on this project and passed all tests with flying colours...while trimming the wooden side panels, I ventured too close to the mild steel frame and it actually cut a beautiful metal curl. Shame on me, but three cheers for LV. No harm done to plane or blade.

It's difficult to see in the photo, but the dashboard is a beautiful length of quartersawn white oak with a few coats of shellac. The headlights are cut down paint cans wrapped in sheet brass. The fuzzy dice are an added touch by a coworker.

There are a few more earlier photos here...

Wow!!

Dan Donaldson

>That is one cool project. Looks like something that would be a blast to build. Could you post some pics of it being used in the production?

That certainly is one fine Jitney.

Basil

>Shoot! I'd like to use it after the production.

Who is going to be the proud owner?

>Rob: Incredible job! Reminds me of an uncle of mine. I the early 50's I visited his place in California. He had about a dozen of this vintage cars in perfect shape, including a Pierce-Arrow and a Stanley Steamer. They must be worth a fortune now. Harold

>I'm truly impressed. Now what happens to this wonderful prop when the stage production is over? I hope it will stay together and get sent to a good home.

>Hi Dave,

Thanks, that's high praise indeed!

After a hundred or so performaces, the car will retire to our props warehouse, a huge space about the size of a small Wal-mart. If it is ever used again (not likely), it will probably undergo a complete facelift and body change. That's fine by me...I hope I'm here when they want it rebuilt. It was a fun (but frantic) project.

Take care....Rob

>Hi Dan,

Thanks..it was great fun to build.

A live stage shot would require a whole long list of design and talent credits to be posted with the photo...that would be too much like advertising for my liking and not appropriate for this forum. You'll just have to take my word that it looks real cool on stage....Rob

Hey Jim!

Rob Brophy Niagara Falls

>Hi Jim,

Good to hear from you!

Thanks for the kind words, but save some for our designer friend Sue L...she did a terrific drawing for me to follow. A good drawing can save days of work on a large project like this.

Rob...who has no intention of growing up.

PS: have you opened your shop yet or is it still too cool?

>Hi Rob,

Well now that you ask, I think I'm about 3-4 weeks away from the start of the official 2004 season...I'm getting hungry, the Kitchener show is in a week, looking forward to that too...

take care,

Jim
