Please tell me that I am ok ;-)

Dan Donaldson

>Two new Lee Valley spokeshaves found their way to my house today. Quite awhile ago, I bought a Record, then an old Stanley, then made a few wooden shaves, then got the LV low angle shave, then a Boggs, and now these. I can resist them, honest! Someone please tell me that I am not too far gone yet;-)

You are fine...

Christopher Fitch @ Memphis

>I have 8:

Two Lee valleys

LV low angle

Both LN Boggs

LN bronze curved bottom shave

and the two Cliftons

but I know that there are posters on here who have lots more than me...

:)

you've still got a wa to go Dan

Dave Anderson Chester,NH

>My best guess is around a dozen and a half in my shop. Who knows how many more by next Fall when I teach a class on making them for our woodworking guild. It's not a problem Dan, they take up so little space compared to other tools.

You're Steve McQueen ...

Clay C in Miami

>This reminds me irresistibly of Steve McQueen in the movie Papillon, asking "Hey, how do I look?"

(If you haven't seen this, a) I can't explain it in a way that will adequately convey why this comes to mind, and b) go rent it, it's a good 'un.)

Anyway, the replies above are hilariously parallel (in text and subtext) to the reply to Papillon - "You're good, you're fine." Except for one thing - here, those reassuring you are already downhill from you, not uphill, as in Papillon.

Enjoy the slope.

>You are ok you are still getting them from the good side of town. start to worry when you start hiding money from the wife for you next purchase. or buying them out of the back of a car under a bridge. or I a friend comes over to shape a handle and you won't let them becouse you are Bogarting the shaves. Then you will need help and it will be time for an intervention where I come over and remove all of your hand tools.

These guys are just trying to...

Ted Owen, Pittsburgh

>break it to you gently, Dan.

Face it. You've got it. It's permanent. You'll have to learn to live with it. Good luck.

Best, Ted

>Okay, let's put this in perspective. They cleaned out an estate nearby a few months ago & discovered the guy still had every newspaper he'd gotten since 1953. Governor Arnold owns (at last count) four Hummers. Some people collect stamps. You think it's because they plan on using them all? You want a spokeshave collection? GO FOR IT!!!

Acording to just about all of my levels, you're about a half a bubble off a plumb. :)

waddaya mean, 'seek medical attention' ?

Clay C in Miami

>Jeez, don't tell me they found a CURE! If that news got out to some of the wives and POSSLQs of the members here, the consequences would be disastrous.

Wait just a moment here, though ... they'd be 'cured' and no longer care about their tools, so they'd all sell ("What was I thinking, buying $5000 in Japanese chisels and 19 Lie-Nielsen planes?"), flooding the market with 1s, and 62s, and great tall gleaming wondrous sloping heaps of ebony, ivory and brass - a sea of items of precision and delight.

And since I'm single, no one would be slipping the 'cure' into MY beers, so I'd be buying with a vastly reduced pool (at least until I married ... or my nieces and nephews figured out that the addition of old tools to the existing fast women and slow horses was both decreasing their odds of a fat inheritance, AND increasing the odds of a fat, destitute uncle moving into their spare room.)

Well... after reading that...

Oh, your ok...

Scott Burr in Ben Lomond CA

>Sure you are. I know, because I'm OK too. Yea thats the ticket. It starts small I need a flat one and a round one. Then another on follows you home. Next thing you know their showing up on your door step. Ya see, your OK, sure...

Re: Please tell me that I am ok ;-)

Definitely NOT OK

Ron in Kokomo

>I am thinkin you are woefully short.

I have nearly 100 shaves.

I am not a collector... no I am merely a user with not enough time to use all my shaves :)

Do not even mention block planes.

Re: Please tell me that I am ok ;-)

oooops I forgot

Ron in Kokomo

>I used to post here a lot and would help poor unfortunates like you when they became ill.

I'll do it for you just this once. You have a sickness. Put all those evil things in a box, carefully wrapped of course andf mail them to me. I won't let them hurt you any more :)

I would definately be interested in the details.

Re: waddaya mean, 'seek medical attention' ?

Jim in Burlington

>Clay you need medical attention take my name to the Dr and get a script for that problem. So since I haven't bought a japenese chisel yet what's going to be on the script? My nephew has a whole list of wants and since Uncle Jim is rapidly spending it faster than it ever got accumilated. Maybe just save enough to put him thru University and he can inherit a bunch of hand tools he'll sell for peanuts.

Hi Peter It's not on the guild....

Dave Anderson Chester,NH

>website yet. At the April meeting on toolmaking at UNH I'll be asking for a show of hands for the level of interest. If there's enuf interest, we'll probably schedule it as a small shop meeting either next Fall or in spring 2005.

So, which is your favourite spokeshave?

Re: So, which is your favourite spokeshave?

Dan Donaldson

>I still have to finish the honing and get them to the same state so it will be a fair comparison. I tried them just a bit on a scrap of cherry and at first feel, I think I like the way they LV fits my hand better, but I need to get them side by side and see. It may take a bit of time to get it done, as I am working on a project for my wife, and if I don't get it done soon, the only thing I will be wondering is if they will be buried with me or not ;-) I don't claim to be a "tool tester", but I will get everything tuned up as close to the same as I can and post my opinions as soon as I finish the other item.

Re: Hi Peter It's not on the guild....

Peter Ulmanis

>OK, thanks. Consider my hand up, and I will try to make it to the meeting in April. I also hope to get to wood days at Shaker Village in June. I live only about 20 min. away but the last two years I didn't make it because of family stuff. This year for sure.

My bride of 27 years always had something going that weekend, but this year the interference is gone.
