Russell Jennings bits

Michael Kieta-Ramstein, Germany

>I'm interested in getting some fine thread auger bits for harder woods. I'm assuming I want the Russell Jennings bits, but I'm willing to be corrected on that. Also, are there differences in the threads on those bits (coarse vs. fine?) and if so, how will I be able to identify them on ebay without being able to hold them? What do I look for?

Thanks for your help,

Michael

>You can check out your compatriot Dieter Schmid for fine and coarse Jennings pattern bits made by Clifton. I have not purchased any of these, so I cannot vouch for their quality, but they look mighty fine to me!

>I bought a used set before christmas it is without a doubt one of the best things to own a set of sharp bits and a good brace. If you need to touch them up LV sells the special file for them. I ask people on e-bay most of them are knowledgeable.

>Thanks for the link. I didn't know he sold them, but the prices are scary. I was in Berlin his summer and went to Dieter's place, but after a fairly long walk, I found out he was closed on Saturday! I did get to look in the window though, so I guess that's some kind of pilgrimage...Small shop, crowded with tools..I plan on returning, and not just for Dieter's. Berlin was a great city.

>It's hard to buy them secondhand because they are not always straight (gerade). Also are their measurements far from exact.

I experienced this with the new ones from Clifton/Clico I bought from Axminster/uk and Dieter/germany.

If you want perfect ones buy the modern "schlangenbohrer"; they are also easer to get.

A minor is that they are harder to set in the handdrill.

Mislabeled?

Thom Trail, Powder Springs, GA

>It appears to me Dieter has the bits mislabeled. The low, fine thread should be for hardwoods and the coarser, deep thread for softwoods.
