Infill curlies

Ernie Miller Topeka

>Here is a picture of the first curlies out of the infill first one were almost full width in mahogany. next I went to White Oak that was a little tougher I think the plane needs more mass. then it was on to maple which were the thinnest and fluffiest. The thumb screw that I got is not what I wanted but it will work untill I get what I do want. I'm happy for now but will start another one with heaver metal maybe even do it the traditional way. I have a small chariot plane started with this metal so I will post pictures of it when it is finished.

>Ernie that is so nice it encourages me to give it a try. Excellent project going to put it on my list after I make a few of the small scrapers and a large spokeshave.

>If you use channel iorn like me get some that is heavier. This one is to light but it was fairly easy to make and cheep also I might have paid $2 of the plane I stile the blade out of and 70 for the thumb screw.

>If I was to charge myself what I charge my boss and add up all the hours it might be an expensive plane. But then I would have to subtract what a theropest would charge? yah cheap plane.

>Ernie,

You've done it! Took mostly scrap and made a functional tool. Absolutly Fantastic in my book. I hope that you are keeping some type of record of what and when you did this, as I'm sure that this one will be the first of many. Perhaps, just for fun you should build a plane completely from found objects. No scavenged (pre-made) blades, chipbreakers etc etc, all from scratch. Hey wait, why don't I do that myself, hey wait, why don't we have a "Homemade Plane Competition"? this could be a Blast don't cha' all think?

Good on ya Ernie, Ingenuity and Creativity at it's finest. :~)

>I like it Ernie. It's kind of an inspiration. The fact that you went and made it with what you had takes away alot of excuses for not doing things. Makes me feel like I could be makin alot more of my own tools.

Still workin on those turnscrews.

Great job.---Jack

You`re my hero,Ernie!

Bob Hackett

>You are a no BS,stand up and be counted kind of guy.You made a plane in the old biker spirit of"chrome don`t get ya home" and made it perform too.Full width curlies for less than $3,WOOO-HOOO!!!

As long as there are dumpsters full of scrap, the possibilities are endless! You are truely an inspiration to thrifty Galoots everywhere.Time for us to put down our excuses and get to work.

>Ernie,

Very inventive, original and fun!

I'm surprised nobody has questioned that expensive thumbscrew. Come on! 70 cents for a thumbscrew. Don't people buy them by the bushel at flea markets for 10 cents!?!

Your plane has inspired me to be a little more creative and dedicated with my shop time. Thanks!

>I'm in I allready have the blades made for some hallows and rounds form bed rails all I need to do is shape them and harden. and just to make it fair I'll make the chariot plane blade out of it also. Time to get out the hand saw. I'll need a 1/8" demming drill bit if you want me to use the post drill and do it all nander.
