Dovetail Saw

Thomas Williams - Columbus Ohio

>I know this may have been covered in the past, but I was wondering what the thoughts were on the Lee Valley dovetail saw or the one offered by Garrett Wade, or any saw in the same price range. I am interested in refining my hand cutting technique, but do not want to make the investment for a LN or Adria, for now.

>There is a L-N on ebay that was just listed. I picked mine up from $65 from a vendor table at the Highland Hardware tent sale last fall. I love, especially at half the price. If you do the ebay thing, it might be worth bidding on. I just did a search on lie nielsen and found it. I usually leave out the hyphon because then it will pick both up.

>Most people aren't too impressed with Garrett Wade's Paragon saws, if that's the one you're referring to. I bought one years ago, but hardly use it; my $1-2 Disston and Sons saws outperform it without sharpening.

>I was given the Garrett Wade "Paragon" saw as a gift. The saw certainly does not come ready for dovetail work. I took the time to modify mine by refiling the teeth to 14tpi and filing a rip profile on the teeth. After doing this, I find that the saw performs quite well. That said, I would still go for an LN or and Adria if I were buying a saw. I guess you can make most saws perform well with proper sharpening and the right amount of set. I kinda wish that my saw didn't work so well now, I have no excuse to get the LN at the next woodworking show in April.

By the way Thomas, I may be moving back to Ohio this summer. It would be nice to meet some local woodworkers when I get there.

Cheers,

Gary Williamson

>I own and work with older Disston's and other vintage pistol grip style saws but the most comfortable saw I've used is the LN straight handled dovetail saw. Don't know why I keep putting off getting one.

>I have an Independence (pre-LN) these days, but between 1980 and 1998 or so, I used a $5 Zona saw for anything under 7/8" thick.

If you can find someone going to PATINA this weekend to do some shopping for you, there should be a few nice Disstons, etc. for very reasonable prices.

>How about you Todd, gonna make the trip Saturday? I can probably make it untill noon or so. I hope it will be as good as the last couple of years sales. I am putting a user #39 in 1/4" width at the top of my list. BTW thanks for showing me yours at the dinner meet a while back. I've had the jones for them ever since!JR

March 13th - You're right, William!

>Bill - you are absolutely right! I'm off a week...all this cold medicine. The weather is finally warm enough to do some finishing, and I'm hacking and sneezing. With our luck, it will be back down in the 20's for the tailgating.

>It's a deal. Big 750's will not be safe. I will try to get there early and catch some tailgating before the doors open. The advance entrance fee didn't pay off for me 2 years ago so I have waited for general admission(free!)and filed in with the herd. Got a nice #7 Disston with nib last year in the lot. And some Russell Jennings bits too. I'll be wearing a CIA sweatshirt so you will be able to spot me from afar. The tool vendors don't seem to mind me drooling on the neat stuff as I shop.JR

>My primary excuse...er...need for it would be drawer bottom dados. Yeah thats the ticket. Drawer bottom dados. My 3/4" #39 is for dados using standard lumber for quick pine shelves and stuff. JR (besides I need to get another #39 to keep the first one company. They get lonely)

>I have a 39-1/2, which needs some restoration work, so I have not actually used a 39.

The reason I asked is that I find that the plywood around here is turning metric. The 1/4-inch size is actually something like 6mm, which is a little less then a 1/4-inch slot. Do you have this problem? Is the 6mm wood tight enough for drawer bottoms in a 1/4-inch slot?

It seems like the plywood and lumber industry is obsoleting a bunch of great old planes. :-(

>Joe, I'm very sorry, but I can't make it this year. I'm tied up weekends this month in a schoonering course, and any of my free time is being spent trying to get her seaworthy for her first cruise of the season, on April 1. If I don't take the course, I don't sail.

We have lots of major repair work to do, and not much time to do it. It's not that I couldn't use some more tools. Shipwright's work, especially with mostly volunteer carpentry crew, can be very hard on tools, if you catch my drift.

>Hey Joe -

My church has a men's retreat that weekend and I'm signed up. I have given some thought to heading out well before the break of dawn and getting there as guys are setting up for tailgating. But I haven't decided for sure yet. Even if I do go I'm sure it'll end up being a "search and destroy" effort without much time for lollygaging (i.e. absorbing the fine galoot ambience) as I could want to be back at the retreat center (an hour away) by 9 am. Not sure that this old body is up to the rigors of this kind of schedule. I'll try to give you a heads up if I decide it's a go so we can keep our eyes peeled for each other.

>Sir William, I hope the class is interesting and not just necessary.

Dave I understand the scheduling conflict. I thought I might have to miss the show because of an important basketball game my sons team is playing on Saturday. I'm lucky the game is in the late evening.

I will miss you guys. If there is some item high on your must have list...give me a heads up. I would be glad to peel an eye for you guys.

I will post a report on any neat things I see. Just to make you guys jealous;-)JR

>I'm a little confused - aren't the grooves for drawer bottoms grooves (long grain) rather than dados (cross-grain), and, if so, why a dado plane? Besides, of course, the fact that it's a cool plane design.
