Plane Japanned

Ernie Miller Topeka

>Here is a picture of this weekends work I got the shell all japaned and baked I pinned the infill to the body. I think it is starting to look pretty nice I still need to drill the hole for the thumb screw that tightens the lever cap and peen the rod that holdes it in place. The blade is off a no-name #3 the shell is a chunk of galvanized channel iorn so is the lever cap. The infill is Monkey Pod wood with a couple coayts of BLO and a coat of witches brew. I hope to be able to give it a test drive tonight. The sole has been partaly laped it is flat at the heal toe and around the mouth and sides but needs a little more work.

>This is an interesting experiment, Ernie - you may be pioneering a new plane type here. It'll be neat to see what it's like when you put it to use.

>I don't know if I understand all I need to know about this but I think it is going to be to light. It weighs only 2 pounds 4 ounces I'm thinking that may be to light but it is bedded at 50 so that might be nice. It is not my design I saw what was described as a Rare Bonom hand plane from Germany on ebay and stole the idea from them. I had this channel iorn that came from a construction job dumpster and though now is just the project for that. I didn't like the look of galvanize so I thought I would japan it to make it look more traditional. One trick I learned was to use a hole punch on cardboard and place that around the pins being peened to protect the japan. And to also place card board on the anvil. Only a couple minor scraches. I'm stopping by the hardware for a thumb screw on the way home to finish it up.

Big Orange Borg

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>At least around here, the orange borg has thumb screws that have a big wing nut on them instead of the flat kinda thing - might give you more torque, and maintain the, um, styling features of your project.

Lever Cap

Todd O. Cronkhite Native of Maine

>Gee, Ernie, that lever cap looks like it'll be a heck of a shaving chute! Better not stand directly behind it, hate to have you speared by your own shavings. ;~)

Looks real neat-o to me. I like Craftsman made tools as I like the ingenuity behind them. hope it works well for you.
