>Plan to order a set tomorrow. Been waiting on those since Rob posted an announcement about them a couple of weeks ago. Had called Bridge City about its saddle and was told it was out of production until mid-March (also a little over $100, pretty sure I wouldn't have bought it anyway). Was thinking about the Woodjoy (?) brass marker for about $60 when Rob mentioned the Veritas saddle. $16.50 sounds like a much better deal.

>Great, I got the old saddle square, and the dovetails markers last week from Lee Valley. Spent more money, and now they have what I want.

Just my luck.

I bought my old style dovetail markers last year..

Christopher Fitch @ Memphis

>I'll just have to give them to my brother since I just ordered a set of the new ones as well as a brass mallet and a bunch of magnets (in preperation for eventual construction of a tool cabinet).

>Actually Eric -

We do have a 45 degree version - being "test-marketed" soon in our Ottawa store...

Had many requests for it...but I'm skeptical about the need/value..

Needless to say...

Eric Hedberg

>Need? Value? This is the Hand Tools forum. Everything we "value" we "need" and we are indeed a "needy" bunch that "value" every new tool. Having said that, I think I "need" to check out your site to see if that new spokeshave has popped up yet. I really "need" a tool fix and those Veritas tools are a good "value" : ) Eric (sadly wishing Ottawa was a suburb of the Twin Cities)

The best vice

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>No, this is not an Emmert vs. Record debate.

I've always argued that significant others should be grateful for those who are addicted to handtool woodworking: unlike some other common vices, it rarely leads to getting arrested, and you are highly unlikely to die young of cirrhosis, lung cancer, or the wide variety of other diseases that come from smoking, drinking, drugging, or lying with loose women/men.

William Duffield on the Cohansey

>I totally agree with your scepticism. If people want to make really silly looking and dysfunctional dovetails, we shouldn't encourage them. Or maybe we should just offer them Incra jigs, or better yet, dovetail pattern inlay banding. Decoration is one thing, and should not be discouraged, but a line in the sand needs to be drawn between decoration and honest hand wrought solid joinery.

One thing though

Dan Donaldson

>I could see a use for one at 45 if it allows you to transfer the straight lind down the side like the dovetail one. Not for dovetails, but if I were going to cut a miter, it might be useful to have an accurate straight line that meets the 45. Perhaps the same could be said for the 60.

If I were hand cutting a miter, the lines could be good as a guide.
