New Veritis #4 1/2 Owner

Brent Langdon, Sterling VA

>I am now the proud owner of a Veritis #4 1/2 smoothing plane! With my 33rd birthday fast approaching and my wife asking about shirts from LL Bean, I knew that I had to step in with some suggestions. Only time will tell if this tool is worth the premium price over a vintage Stanley #4.

I want to send my praise along to the customer service at Lee Valley. I opened my present last Sunday. When cleaning the plane, I notices that the frog was not machined flat all the way to the edge and there was a gap on one end between the blade and frog. I thought that maybe I was being picky, but for this price I expected at least a replacement frog.

I called Lee Valley customer service Monday morning. I did not have to wait on hold and I did not have to explain to the guy what a frog is. I described the issue and he said, "yep, you got a defective plane, we will mail a replacement today". I got the replacement yesterday and it looks perfect. Sounds like there was a batch of defective frogs and unfortunately I got one of them. It would have been better if they caught the issue before they shipped mine, but LV did all I could ask to correct the issue.

Sorry for the long post. I had to tell someone because all my wife said was "looks just like your other planes". She just does not understand!

>Happy Birthday and Congrats on your wife's fine taste in gift selection! Only if my wife would realise that I don't want clothes, it's toys, er tools that I lust for!

The LV 4 1/2 was my first plane and I think you, like me, will find it to be a great addition to your tool arsenal!

Having new acquisitions blend in with the rest is actually not a bad thing at all. Happy birthday!

It just ain't fair! Especially when you consider what would happen to you if you made a comment like that about her new shoes or new pocketbook or new dress :^)

>You make a great point. Everybody screws up now and again. What marks an exceptional company is how they deal with it when they _do_ screw up. And LV is _definitely_ an exceptional company.

Congrats on your new plane

>Perfection, while always strived for is a beast rarely caught. One mark of an exceptional person, or company is how they handle the occasional "oppsee", and there is no doubt that LV falls into the Exceptional catagery.

Obviously your wife has not developed a trained eye for different tools, which can be of great advantage to you when it comes to sneaking in new ones. :~) Best to do your best to keep it that 'a way too I think.

Congrats on your new tool, and Happy Birthday.
