>Craftsman 409 that is.

Brought back from the dead a plane that I picked up at the flea market. It's and old Craftsman (according to the blade) One top of the blade in an oval it says" Unconitionally Guarenteed

Craftsman

America's Highest Quaility

and on the cast, just in front of the tote is stamped 409.

the only reason I bought this plane is because it was in such sad shape, and now, all it needs is a sharpening and it'll be functional again. I didn't notice that 409 stamp when I bought it, so I am quite happy to finally get a lil' 409, even if it is just a plane.

Any clues to it's age?

>Todd,

The below link may be of help. Also, #409 sounds like Sargent numbering for their equivalent to Stanley's #4.

Cheers,

Mike

>Interestingly, my Craftsman No. 6-sized plane has a logo unlike any of those, way more Edwardian than any of those shown. Maybe it's valuable...

>I've never seen a Crafstman with Sargent numbering. I'll bet it is a Sargent 409 with a replacement Crafstman blade. If so, its a nice little plane.

>Think your correct Roger, only thing we dont know is what the lever cap is, but like the blade that could be anything. Sure would like to see pic of it, just might be VBM.

>Mike,

My logo wasn't shown :~( thanks for the Link tho. :~)

A bit more info:

- The frog seat is shaped like this 1-1-1. Is this a.k.a. "H" shaped?

-There is no frog ajustment screw

-The tote and knob is held on with rods that have the brass cap screw that is about 1/2" deep.

-The lever cap is Hole on Hole (a.k.a. key slot?)

-Blade abjustment knob is brass

-Lateral adjuster lever is a flat piece of metal that is twisted at the top,

-The face of the frog has depressions that are japaned.

Could be a Sargent with a replcement blade.

It is a nice little plane, just wish the horn wasn't broken off of the tote. :~(

Thanks all for the input so far.
