Hand Plane Newbie

Steven E. Schafer

>Hi all,

I have very little experience with hand planes. The only one I currently own is a Lie-Nielsen low angle adjustable mouth Block Plane. Anyhow, I have a very nice 14" wide by 8' long 4/4 board of Quilted Sapelle (rough) that I would like to hand joint and plane. It has some crook to it and also has some warping. I can cut the board into shorter pieces, but I would like to retain the width. What planes do I need for this task and how should I go about it?

I know that Lie-Nielsen makes higher angle frogs for some of their planes to handle highly figured woods. Is this something I will need? I like Lie-Nielsen, but would rather pay less if I can get a relatively comparable product. How do the Veritas planes stack up? I have also been looking at Steve Knight's planes, but I really don't know much about them.

Thanks for your help,

Steve

>You are going to need at least a #7 jointer it will also help to have a scrub of some sort Woodies are good and cheap for that but an old #5 will work but for about the same mone maybe a little more get a woodie. you will probably also need a smoother I love the one I got from Steve Knight. Lee Valley plane are good I don't have an LN so I can't speak for them. I have lots of olde Baileys and they are all tuneable and quite usable so it you want to spend less that might be the way to go. but there are other good new planes out there ECE and a few other woodies. Steve also makes jointers and he is allways willing to help if you ever have any problems or questions. You will need a jointer and a smoother and a scrub will make things go faster.
