source for a GOOD mini tape measure?

marketymarkmark

>as with just about everything that Stanley makes these days, my home depot purchased Stanley tape measure BITES. the plastic piece of junk broke after not more than 100 uses...

so i'm looking for a good one, something that will last. anyone know of a source of a solidly built-to-last one?

i know highland hardware has one with a lifetime guarantee, but thought i'd check for others...only trouble with the highland version is that it's only 6 feet long...my stanley was 10 feet...(i guess 6 feet that WORK are better than ten feet that DON'T, though!)

reasonably priced, preferably...the HH's are $10, that's about the most i'll pay for a mini version...

thanks in advance!

clarification...

>when i say "mini", i'm not talking about a small tape measure...i mean the REALLY small ones, that you can comfortably fit inside your pocket...for example, my stanley was about 3/8" thick and 2" square..

>I can't offer any specific advise on brands, but when I need a new one, I look at the sewing notions counter at the grocery store, or I go to Michaels Crafts. I always look for ones that have fiberglass tape, because they don't stretch. Also, the flexible tape is really useful for measuring around curves, which comes in handy, for example, if you are trying to skin the hull of a small boat.

These have plastic cases, and are cheap enough that I usually keep a backup in my toolchest, in case I lose one, or drop it and step on it. Note that I always keep a Stanley 12' PowerLock (33-312) on my belt. The mini tape, which is in my pocket, is the backup.

>I find them regularly at garage sales, for about 50 cents, still in great shape. They were often used as promotional giveaways or company "party favors." My favorite is an old metal-cased Stanley - I own a couple.

>The most used tape measure I own. I'd replace it immediately if it broke. But in about 6 years or more of living in my pocket and keeping my keys together, it has not broken. The chrome paint has worn off but it works just fine. I see they have one with both English and metric measurements too. I will have to find one of those. I frequently measure certain items in centimeters and have used a marker to mark centimeters on the back of my tape measure. But I see they are wearing off.

I wouldn't keep a tape measure in my pocket if it did not have a keychain with it. I'd be interested in the Zippo from Lee Valley but it does not have a keychain. Too bad. I also paid about $0.50 for my Stanley after rebates and postage. Best $0.50 I ever spent.

>Marketymarkmark,

Lee Valley sells some nifty tapes. My favorite tape, and the one I use all the time, is a Lee Valley 10' (or so). Unlike all my other tapes, the LV reads from right to left; that way I can pull the tape out with my left hand and mark with my right, and the numerals are all right-side up.

This tape is a real forehead slapper. ("Now, why didn't I think of that?")
