Bizarre old japanese plane *LINK*

>Pam et al,

There's an old japanese kanna on ebay now, and I've never seen a blade like this one. It has a 4-sided steel blade that fits into a normal blade-shaped holder. The cap iron fits over all of these so it is a 3-piece blade assembly. There's even a screw that holds the two blade pieces together. Bizarre!

Has anyone ever heard of anything like this? I can't believe that this would ever have been considered a quality item. It exudes a "handyman" quality to me.

However, I'd expect a bit of slippage from bottom to top with planing, so the top edge could get punky.
