Weekend projects?

Ernie Miller Topeka

>Time fly's when you are having fun! it's the weekend allready. I have lots to do I will continue to work on the bench tool boxes. only 12 drawers to go. I also need to start designing a n island/bar for the wife she wants some space filled between the dining room and living room. This will be the first project that she is allowig me to make for the house in almost two years. I think I have most of the materials except the top she wants that solid surface counter top stuff that looks like granit. I also need to start on a storade shed to hold all of my wood. An opertunity developed this week where I was able to get a stack of gently used 2X4's and exterior plywood for hauling it off about 50 sheets of ply and 250 2X4's. I should be able to make somthing large enough to hold most of the wood and free up space in the power tool shop for my wifes car. It sure is nice to have most of the snow melted I guess mud season has officialy arived. HAVE A ROCKIN GOOD WEEKEND!!

>dumpster diving for hardwoods and now you've scored all of that construction lumber too. I think we have to crown you King of the Scroungers.

More tool making for me this weekend. I have to work on some cutting gages and some more marking knives.

>I guess I have a eye for it. I was driving down the road and saw this pile so I stopped and ask. I told them I would haull it away for free! wouldn't even charge them a dump fee. Roge should end up with quite a bit of it also. I got walnut out of the hardwood dumpster this morning but only about 5 bf.

>Ernie, great score with the construction lumber. You indeed have an eye for "recycling". I am going to spend my weekend shop time sharpening. I am going to flatten the backs of several chisels and go at a plane blade or two using 'scary sharp'. I've never used scary sharp, and I want to see what all the fuss is about.

Walnut cross

Jack from Maine

>My grandson is getting first communion and he wants grandpa to make him a cross. He collects them. I have a piece of curly walnut that I figure will come out lookin pretty nice once I'm done. Maybe add another species in the center for looks. I won't know til I get started.Don't even know how to start but it can't be too difficult. Basically 2 pieces of wood joined together in one spot. Have a great weekend.---Jack

>Will,

I tried Scary Sharp for the first time this week and I can see why so many people like it. Very quick and an easy way for success.

Having said that I still think I prefer waterstones.

As for my weekend I will be sharpening a few plane blades and chisels myself. I also have a few saws that I want to joint and sharpen.

This also doesn't include the work that I will be doing over the weekend for Monday.

Hope everyone else will have a ROCKIN GOOD WEEKEND!

>Brad, what grits did you use and where did you find them? Auto Zone here in K.C. only has up to 1000 grit. I went to an autobody supply paint place and they only went up to 1500. I wonder how fine I need to go up to for the perfect mirror finish?

Scary Sharp source

Roger Nixon

>Hey Will, go to Wal-Mart and head to the auto accessories section where they have bondo. They will have packs of SiC up to 2000 grit & much cheaper than the auto store. You don't have to go all the way to 2000 but after 600 grit it only takes a few strokes on the 1000 & 2000 to get a super nice edge. At 2000 grit you can count your nosehairs using the blade for a mirror.

Canadian Source and Trivia

Brad in Ottawa

>Will,

Sorry I can't be of too much assistance. I went to a great Canadian Secret to get my SS Stash.

Canadian Tire.

Basically it's a Hardware Store that many Canadians are familiar with. They don't have a lot of top end selections when it comes to tools but they do have a neat reward program.

For every dollar you spend you recieve so much Canadian Tire money. (If you thought real Canadian dollars looked like Monopoly money you have to see Canadian Tire Money.)

Not a bad source as they have an automotive section that has some pretty decent samples for me to try my luck with SS. Besides I like collecting the Canadian Tire funny money.

Offhand I can't remember the grits I used but I did supplement them. I had one micro abrasive sheet from LV. Without much SS experience to base my judgement on I would say that the micro abrasive worked extremely well.

SS was fast and easy. However, I think that I would stick to waterstones for sharpening my bevels. I would use SS for flattening backs though.

Have fun!

Brad
