Hand tool victory @ the job site

>I know I haven't posted much, been busy with 'outdoor' stuff vs shop stuff lately. But I had to share a quick story with everyone. So today I'm working with a guy drilling post holes and other assorted task for our new pole barn and paddock. We have no utilities there yet, so I'd brought my Disston 16 cross cut saw, brace and bit etc.. to the site.

We'll it's time to cut some 2 x 8's for some concrete forms. Seems his cordless battery is dead for the fancy cordless circular saw and his drill... Hum, I pulled out my old saw and cut up all the wood like 'butta'. Then put his hex driver in the brace and finished driving his lag bolts while he stared as if he'd never seen such a thing... All he could say is 'wow, how do I get one of those?, I've never seen something like that @ Home Depot'... 'Oh', I say sweetly, ' you just spend $10 at a flea market and 30 minutes with a file'

Then I took some time to tell him the history of the saw and my old brace. He was amazed when I told him I used this 'old' stuff on a regular basis. Anyway, the little victories always seem so sweet to me. And, I think we've won another convert.

Anyway, back to reading about you all get to actually *use* your hand planes... this project can't be done too soon ;-)

>Ranbir,

Great post and a wonderful story, it's always nice to hear of a hand tool user impressing a confirmed power tool person with the utility of "old-fashioned" tools. Put a mark in the victory column for us.

>Hazaah! Chalk one up for common sense. Just imagine what would have gone on if you weren't there with some proper tools.

>AIN'T HAND TOOLS GREAT?

In the fall I have some frames I put over the Rhodies in front of the Post Office I work at. I use a Yankee screwdriver on them. Most people have never seen one, I had one fellow walk right off the side walk watching me.

I also mow with a cou[ple of old push mowers I found in the dump. One of which is a single wheeled trimmer. The really neat thing is they were made not far from there.
