>Finally, here's the simple jig I make the squares with. The jig is a simple "U"-channel made from three pieces of wood that fits the saddle square snugly. I turn on the disc sander and slowly ease the square up to the paper, taking small bites until the edge is perfect.

Then I turn the jig around and do the other side. Any angle is feasible. This one is at 7. As soon as I buy another square, I'll make a 9 one, or maybe one with a higher pitch.

>Perfect. I'll be the first to buy a set of these. I'm always trotting my square back and forth between work and home.

Thanks for the update Rob. And welcome back (unless you're still in a Japanese airport).

>I must be particularly stupid today; but these look like you could do one fairly hefty size only. If you tried to use one side for marking, then moved the saddle for the other side, you can't see any reference point.

If you're going to use a jig, which I don't usually, I really like Kingshott's plastic, or maybe a lot narrower solid version

>So far I haven't found any application where I cannot use this square. I have been using this square for exactly a year and have built about a dozen projects with it, not to mention a bunch of drawers and demonstration joints.

As I noted above, I mark out the location of the tails with calipers before knifing or penciling the tail cuts. So all I need to be able to see is the dot left by the caliper's point.

I put the square up against the dot, mark the lines and shift the square to the next dot.

If you are laying out your joints freehand, I could see how this would obscure the layout.

>Rob, I'd like to see these out of hardened steel so they won't cut with a layout knife.
