PA spice cabient progress

Bill Tindall, E. TN

>Crappy weather drove me inside so I made some progress. Boxes are now stained. I mixed burnt umber in Tung oil for the stain. Molding went on well; got good miters and didn't ding anything setting nails (I am slowly learnig the virtues of patience). The top molding is wide because it hides a "secret" drawer. The tops have a nice curl but it doesn't show much in picture. I hope to make a tombstone door with a piece of crotch panel, but will need help with it.

Haven't decided on finish. Will be shellac, varnish or lacquer.

>Very nice, are you following a plan? I am starting to plan my own spice box and am looking for ideas.

Just purchase a curly maple board about 12 inches wide by eight feet long. It may be my start.

>Great progress, only 27 drawers to go, you can do it.

drawers already done

>"All" that reamins is the door and finishing it all. There are more than 27 as several are hidden. Tedious dovetailing.

"plans"

>I "shrunk" the typical spice box as I think they are too big for a jewlery box on a dresser. These are about 2/3 sized. Case is 14 by 10 1/2. I just did a lot of sketching and consulting till I came up with something that looked ok. I could provide dimensions if that is useful. The biggest challenge is the top molding if it hides a drawer. Most spice boxes look too top heavy to me. Actually a nicer proportioned box could be made by eliminating the hidden top drawer and that is what I would do if I made another, which is not likely. The next project will be more macro scale- a PA Dutch dresser inspired by a trip to Winterthur.

I find maple too challenging to work, but my hat is off to those than can.

>Wow that looks nice. Do you finish the inside of the drawers?

Re: PA spice cabient progress

yes and tedious

Bill Tindall, E. TN

>The drawer fronts were stained like the case and they received several coats of shellac. The fronts were resawed and bookmatched from the same material as top, which has some curl. The insides got 3 coats shellac. I found that a round, absorbant water color brush did well inside the small drawers.

It would have made way more sense to finish the case and then do the drawers but there were case molding decisions that I still fretting over and I was in the mood to do drawers. So, now I have them stored in a bag awaiting finishing the case and door.
